Out of the Blue

Knowing my affection for spiders, MrsBlue called me over to see a bunch of little spider hatchlings on the outside of one of our windows. Right off I noticed something odd, as the little buggers were not segmented, and it struck me they might be ticks. But on closer examination, they only seemed to have six legs each, which would make them insects, rather than arachnids, but once again, the un-segmented bodies didn't fit that either. So I did a little Googling and found that larval ticks, often called "seed ticks," only have (you probably see where this is going), yup, six legs. The general rule for creepy crawlies in the BlueTower is that spiders get to stay, and everyone else gets the catch and release treatment where practical. But this was a whole different situation, and even though these little guys were actually outside, they got the vacuum treatment nonetheless. So what started out as a charming little nature watch ended up as a murder spree. And I don't even feel bad about it.

Fair point. I sometimes forget that this site is overwhelmingly composed of urbanites and suburbanites.
I think Sauron is also a vet, so that's some professional advice right there.

Snake hysteria here...

If it's a round head, don a set of quality leather work gloves, and, once you find it, gently grasp it behind the head and about three quarters down the body. Take the poor frightened thing outside and set it free.

Snakesisses and spiderbros are very good for your local ecosystem.

If it's a wedge head, and a wedge head is very distinctive in shape, call your local animal control and they should come remove it.

I'd just go with animal control - they are the professionals and know their stuff. Even a nonpoisonous snake can give you a good bite, and you could also hurt it pretty bad - they're surprisingly fragile.

Plus, you know, unless you're a herpetologist, you could mistake one species for another, or even get bitten while trying to get a good look.

I got a new pet this week as well.

A MUTHER FUCKING SNAKE IN MY MUTHER FUCKING BASEMENT!

Now once I figured out what it was.. and 3 fingers of bourbon later went back down to capture and release... the fucker went MIA.

As I told mrgrosser, it's gonna start off like a Mogwai and end up like the Andaconda movie.

So I need 3 people to come help me get all my lego sets, comic books and computer/gaming related stuff out of my house, oh and 1 person with a orbital nuclear strike unit to nuke said basement from orbit.

Yes it is the only way to be sure.

Look at the bright side: you won't get Lyme or spotted fever from a snake. And the chances of it being poisonous are slim.

There is no bright side... my washer/dryer are in the basement and I'm quickly running out of undies and socks!

Ticks are hardly little buggers.. I'd check the vacuum canister just to make sure there is no movement, or nuke it from orbit, the only way to be sure.

Yeah if roaches can survive the vacuum treatment, baby ticks absolutely can. WD-40 and a lighter are the best bet, Aliens style.

Yup, gotta agree with you. Ticks of all stripes, along with fire ants, have to die tout suite.
