Out of the Blue

Our friends from the neighborhood are back from their extended trip to Oklahoma. We are very happy to see everyone again, and the Gunnar-man has been reunited with Jedi, his doggie (mostly) bff. It's not all good news by any stretch, however, as their vacation was interrupted by a freak accident. While sitting in a park, a tree limb fell on one of the twins, hitting the boy right in the head out of the clear blue sky, so to speak. Apparently looking up at sound of the branch breaking saved his life, as he "only" suffered a skull fracture, rather than a broken neck. The good news is that he suffered no apparent brain damage, and he remains as chatty and charming as ever. But there are lots of issues with this that still must be worked out, and he's not out of the woods yet. This means most of his physical activity has to be curtailed, and it's very likely he has surgery in his future. This is all obviously very upsetting, so we're all just trying to help out as well as we can while we hope for the best. My contribution for the day is to be spending a little time with him to help with some complicated LEGO problems, which seems the definition of the least I can do, but you do what you can.

Meh, the Alita look is a little weird, but the action looked fantastic. I'll be going to see it. I'm sure they'll explain the reason they went unnatural for the size of her eyes at some point.

I think my entire problem with the trailer is that Alita herself looks animated into the real world as opposed to a part of it. She looks like a bad effect, thus my comment about hoping they can improve the CG.
Is that possible or even necessary, I mean with Ex Machina they are going after the turing test. But with this story not so much.

I thought she looked fine, along with the rest of the CGI looking above average. Robert Rodriguez has the tools, knowledge and skillset to make any directors ideas and story come to life.

I guess it depends if you want your characters integrated into the world like Rocket and Groot, or if you want them to look obviously not part of the world like Roger Rabbit. To me right now, Alita is looking a lot more like Roger than Rocket. That being said, a lot of times trailer CG is incomplete, so I'm hoping that is the case.

Real big eyes are classic to anime.

Anyone watch the Battle Angel trailer? I hope they work on that CG.

I think Cameron is trying to add realism to Anime. The problem is anime is not realistic and the brain quickly tosses it into uncanny valley land.

I dunno, the anime look of the character is definitely part of it. However, the CG of the character herself is also a problem: it's too shiny compared to the live humans. Uncanny valley for sure.

I agree. I mean is she supposed to look like a robot? I mean she has an obvious robot body and a strange alien looking face and head? Or is that simply the manga style that doesn't translate well to the screen? I think the producers have no fucking clue, and should have maybe asked the author of the manga for an opinion.

I think she should look like a regular girl.

It would have probably been better to make the film traditional anime with state of the art CG.

Oklahoma City is a dumpster fire. Tulsa area is a bit better, but it's still, you know, Oklahoma...

Really? Wow. Shots of it looks pretty nice. Hell, they wrote a musical about the state, it can't be all bad.

It's not that bad. Lived there a good chunk of my life and still go back often and even miss it at times.

That said, I'm happy to live elsewhere now.

Some friends and I used to cut vines and swing on them as kids. The first few swings were always quite telling if it was going to be a stable and fun vine. I landed on my butt one time with that ominous crack sound coming from above. Several seconds later a branch broke over my head. Luckily it was only 4-5" diameter and a little rotten. It split in half when it hit me, but I can say with certainty that it was the hardest I've even been hit in my life. And to be honest I'm probably luckily that I managed to stumble away with only a concussion.
