Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered Edition Next Month

THQ Nordic announces a slight delay to Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered Edition, which is now expected on July 3rd after being promised for Q2 of this year. They also announce that those who own the original version of this third-person shooter on Steam will automatically receive a free copy of the re-Mars-tering. They accompany the news with a new trailer and some details:
THQ Nordic is proud to align itself with the People Of Mars and confirm that Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered will launch on PC, PlayStation®4 and across the Xbox One family of devices including Xbox One X on July 3rd, 2018. If you own a powerful PC, a PlayStation®4 Pro or an Xbox One X, you can finally enjoy this classic game’s incredible destruction in glorious 4K resolution (full details below).

Furthermore, players who already own the 2009 version of Red Faction: Guerrilla on Steam will automatically receive the Re-Mars-tered edition for free in their accounts. From July 3rd, these players can simply download Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered from their Steam library and start swinging their sledgehammers.

One more random fun fact about Mars (in real-life): Did you know that the planet Mars is named after the roman God of War? The ancient Greeks, however, called it 'Ares', after their God of War. We cannot help but wonder if future generations of gamers will eventually rename it 'Kratos'…

Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered features:

  • Fully reworked graphics – heavily reworked textures and graphic features adding, for example, specular maps
  • Improved shadow rendering
  • Improved lighting
  • Reworked shaders and postprocessing

The buildings look a little better (far less shiny, plastic-y), but other than that this is highly underwhelming.

It's free, so whatever, but this isn't even worthy of a "Remaster" moniker.

Shame, I was hoping they'd really worked on making it look very modern.

Its a shame no one remembers the original Red Faction, a FPS with great gunplay, and COMPLETE DYNAMIC destruction, not this gimmicky static 3rd person stuff where your explosions don't even leave craters. You could actually dig tunnels with a rocket launcher in the original, I shit you not.

Yes, but there were limits. You could only dig a set number of holes and then it stopped working. The destruction wasn’t even remotely at the level of Guerilla, where you could take out building supports and watch a tower fall into a building next to it. Yes, things perhaps fell apart a bit too easily, or sometimes a building would stay up with an impossible number of missing sections, but it’s STILL one of the best real-time physics engines. If Crackdown 3 ever comes out, it may finally be the new king of mass destruction, although they’re severely dialing it back in single player. The physics calculations are gonna be done by external servers, and they can’t guarantee people will have internet for single player. I really hope they offer the ability to turn it back on for single player.

Aaaaanyway, I do hope this means they may be making a sequel. Maaaaybe put more color into the next one? Guerilla did have a horribly bland color scheme, although that didn’t stop me from playing.

I remember that, and about a billion games before it. This is Blues... not a Fortnite fan club.

The terrain was destructible in Red Faction, which for a poly based engine was pretty impressive, but I'm not sure it was as appreciated as it should've been because of the voxel games that proceeded it (like Outcast and Shattered Steel, amongst others).

From what I remember (and I could be wrong)- the guys who built this "gimmicky static 3rd person stuff" did this after they made the Red Faction engine, but instead of just making a game where you could make tunnels, they worked on physics that could keep buildings standing. That's a hell of a lot more complex. Obviously having a deforming ground as well as those physics would've killed any computer on the planet, so... I think they made a good choice.

I can only hope that this new-found interest means that THQ is looking to bring the series back. A Red Faction Guerilla 2 would be AWESOME...

In Red Faction, I expected to not only get a hammer but a sickle, too. What a letdown...

Sigh, I wish they'd do the same for Armageddon. I know most people hated that game - but I thought it was quite fun. I actually finished RF:A but never quite finished RF:G. Still, a remastered version of Guerrilla, maybe now I'll finish it.

First Titan Quest, now this. I bought the Ragnarok expansion just to suport them a while back. This is how to win fans. And RFG is still a very good game.

Ah yes, Red Faction: Smash the entire world with a Hammer.

Unfortunately this game is so old I don't even have it on Steam or anything, I have it on DVD I think.

*EDIT* Nope, Gamersgate. Apparently Gamersgate owners are not going to get the remastered version for free.

Bummer. The Steam one drops to $4 pretty consistantly, so if you grab it on sale you’ll be all set.

Kudos to THQ/Nordick for once again giving existing owners a free copy of a remaster...

and also once again a HUGE FUCK YOU FART in the general direction of the greedy fucksticks at From Software and Bandit Namcocks (Dork Soles Remastered = $20 for existing owners who received one of the shittiest PC ports in the history of gaming in the first place... FUCK YOU FUCKING FUCKERS! ).
