Underworld Ascendant Trailer

The summer games show season is upon us, so here is the E3 trailer for Underworld Ascendant, the sequel to the Ultima Underworld games from Otherside Entertainment, the developer formed by Warren Spector and Paul Neurath. The clip comes with this elevator pitch for the game:
Published by 505 Games, Underworld Ascendant will return players to a memorable and breathtaking fantasy realm rife with danger and full of intrigue. The game encourages and rewards player experimentation, boasting an environment that reacts dynamically to player choices and a wide range of items, skills and abilities that affords players meaningful gameplay decisions. OtherSide is innovating upon the player-authored gameplay of the original series in bold new ways to bring the ‘immersive sim’ genre forward in this action-RPG.

This looks absolutely nothing like either of the Underworld games.

Is this with the HUD disabled?

I agree. The Underworld games were actually pretty deep RPGs, this looks more like a Thief clone.

Bit concerned about this one. I don't think they had anywhere near enough budget to properly polish it. It's probably going to feel janky and unfinished.

I don't think they played Ultima Underworld for 20 years or so, hence this game

I agree with the criticism of the art style. Dated graphics would be OK but the problem with UU is the lack of any kind of atmosphere. It just looks bland, artificial (claymation sounds about right) and soulless.

It seems like the environments could do with more features, more objects, more attention to detail, more TLC and then it could also use a lighting overhaul for a more "underworldly" look & feel.

The colors appear to be too "cool" in this video. It needs more yellow/red like the world is lit by candles and torches rather than white flood lights.

The lighting changes should then result in much better dynamic shadows and a high contrast between the lit and the ideally pitch black spaces.

All of the above would help a lot in creating a better -namesake- atmosphere. It's called Underworld ffs.

Whats wrong with the visual style? I backed this and have been playing it off an on, but also trying to avoid playing it to much because I want to enjoy it once its completed. its actually a pretty good game. Still needs a lot of work, but its definitely got the potential.

I don't like the style either... but UU1 is still my #1 favorite RPG to this day... so I will still buy this.

As for what's wrong with it... it looks like claymation. I'd rather they had gone with a more realistic style... even if it was dated by today's standards. UE3 or Original Crytek (Far Cry 1) detail would have been fine.

This looks pretty rough for something that's due in four months. On the flipside, they didn't get a ton of money from their KS; this is probably what a million bucks or so gets you.

Yea, but what they have come up with has been pretty good.

Yeah, not much liking the visual style of it or the janky animations.
