Underworld Ascendant Trailer

The summer games show season is upon us, so here is the E3 trailer for Underworld Ascendant, the sequel to the Ultima Underworld games from Otherside Entertainment, the developer formed by Warren Spector and Paul Neurath. The clip comes with this elevator pitch for the game:
Published by 505 Games, Underworld Ascendant will return players to a memorable and breathtaking fantasy realm rife with danger and full of intrigue. The game encourages and rewards player experimentation, boasting an environment that reacts dynamically to player choices and a wide range of items, skills and abilities that affords players meaningful gameplay decisions. OtherSide is innovating upon the player-authored gameplay of the original series in bold new ways to bring the ‘immersive sim’ genre forward in this action-RPG.

I agree with the criticism of the art style. Dated graphics would be OK but the problem with UU is the lack of any kind of atmosphere. It just looks bland, artificial (claymation sounds about right) and soulless.

It seems like the environments could do with more features, more objects, more attention to detail, more TLC and then it could also use a lighting overhaul for a more "underworldly" look & feel.

The colors appear to be too "cool" in this video. It needs more yellow/red like the world is lit by candles and torches rather than white flood lights.

The lighting changes should then result in much better dynamic shadows and a high contrast between the lit and the ideally pitch black spaces.

All of the above would help a lot in creating a better -namesake- atmosphere. It's called Underworld ffs.
