Apple Rejects iOS Steam Link App

Valve announces the iOS edition of the Steam Link App has failed to meet with Apple's standards, and at this point will not be released for iPhones. Here's their explanation:
On Monday, May 7th, Apple approved the Steam Link app for release. On Weds, May 9th, Valve released news of the app. The following morning, Apple revoked its approval citing business conflicts with app guidelines that had allegedly not been realized by the original review team. Valve appealed, explaining the Steam Link app simply functions as a LAN-based remote desktop similar to numerous remote desktop applications already available on the App Store. Ultimately, that appeal was denied leaving the Steam Link app for iOS blocked from release. The team here spent many hours on this project and the approval process, so we're clearly disappointed. But we hope Apple will reconsider in the future.

Apple has become the new IBM with droves of blind loyal customers buying $1000 phones that only does what Apple wants to be done with them

So, if this works on Androids, how well does it run on the $50 Amazon tablets?

I have a $50 amazon tablet. I checked and the app isn't in the store. I will try installing the google play store and going from there.

Installed google service on my Fire HD 8.
A big problem I have in general with this is that my desktop is connected wirelessly. So streaming from that to another wireless device will always be iffy.

Streaming to my nexus 5x had better network response, but using a PS4 controller and android via bluetooth is a known problem.

With the Fire tablet the network response was worse but I had no PS4 controller connectivity issues (no controller lag)

I think if your desktop is hardwired, the tablet would work fine.

I bought this tablet just to read books and watch movies during a trip to The Netherlands last year and I have been constantly impressed with it.

Itís not quite the same thing as a portal to another storefront. Itís a way to stream gameplay to a device thatís on the same local network. I doubt the people who denied the app actually understand what it does, and somehow think it works from anywhere.

Itís not competition; these games generally arenít available on the Apple store, as phones donít have the muscle to run them.

So, if this works on Androids, how well does it run on the $50 Amazon tablets?

And if Microsoft did this with Windows, people would be screaming bloody murder.

Microsoft was found to be an "anti-competitive monopoly" because they bundled Internet Explorer with Windows. Apple does that and far more and now they're banning apps from being allowed on their premium priced devices because they might dissuade people from buying the garbage skinner box games that little their app store. This is completely anti-consumer. Comparing this to Amazon not allowing a competing retailer to advertise on their site is a false equivalance at best.

There's been other incidents of Apple not allowing certain books/comics, apps on their store simply based on content. No thanks, I won't have some company regulating what I am allowed to read/view. Apple banned this app because it's basically a storefront where they won't get a 30% cut of the profit.

I never even considered Steam Link via IOS devices, that would have been brilliant. I enjoyed the Shadowrun games on my ipad. Wish there were more like that available.

The timing is interesting considering the recent Steam news on limiting adult content, and then reversing.

Storefront costs being brought up to defend Steam vs. Apple.. Truly hilarious.

Apple banned this because it's a competitor, just like Amazon won't let you advertise on its platform if you're a competitor.

Exactly, and it supports PC gaming as well which you can't do on Macs. So this was one wanna-be-monopolist against the other, no wonder they did it...

I have iOS devices but It's precisely because of this that I went primarily Android. Apple provides a great user experience and some great services but at the expense of developer and consumer freedom.

Above all, Apple in my opinion resorts to anti-competitive practices to push consumers to use their services over others. Steam link is being locked out of Apple store because Apple considers it a gateway to the steam store.
Meanwhile devices like the Nvidia Shield have no such restrictions.

This is extremely disappointing. I upgraded my network for this and was ready to play from my iPad. Wtf apple? I hope they wonít take other software down or else Iíll be really pissed off. Well, this is +1 for android tablets. If this goes on Iíll have to ditch apple and thatís a shame, being a loyal customer and all :-(

Not sure why I'd want to play any of my steam games on my phone or tablet, regardless what kind, anyway.

What now? Noone wants to wheel his/her desk to the Apple iOS Steam Link App workgroup because it is no fun. Well, just give it up, I guess.

Better still, dump Apple entirely.
Why? Then your corporate overlords won't be able to determine what you can use on the phone you own paid for.
