Unreal Turns 20 - Get Unreal Gold for Free

GOG.com now offers Unreal Gold, Epic's first-person shooter, completely DRM-free and completely cost free, as this is free to keep for all who claim their copy by May 24th. The game is also currently free on Steam where they do not specify when the free offer will end. This celebrates the 20th anniversary of Epic's first-person shooter, which was initially released on this day in 1998. Look around, crystal clear water shimmers, shadows dance and shift, alien architecture fades into the horizon. Discover the secret of this mysterious planet and find out what caused a peaceful race to be enslaved by vicious merciless aggressors.

  • Over 47 eye-popping single player missions.
  • 20 multiplayer levels with 5 different game types.

I wasn't a fan of Unreal games. I liked Quake more. Original classic DOOM (1&2) and HL (1&2) were the best for me!

I just bought an used Quake 1 CD retail from a local estate sale a couple months ago. However, it seems to be encrypted to unlock into full game. Installing it only gave me its shareware.

And UT didn't get good until UT3, which was great.

Unreal was just okay, but the original UT was fantastic. So many great modes and gameplay mechanics pioneered in that game.

I still fire it up occasionally to play Facing Worlds instagib or Hall of Giants CTF or one of the Assault levels.

To me, the best games transcended themselves in their fans’ minds to be an actual world… a place that “exists”, and that you could travel to. What I remember most about Unreal was how Na Pali felt real. The jonesing to hop onto the computer wasn’t to “play a game” and “shoot monsters”, it was to go back and discover more of Na Pali. Even all these years later, I still remember it in a similar fashion.

I recall the fantastic strangeness of a place completely different than anything I had experienced before, and how even though the genre was technically science fiction, almost everything about it felt very ancient and mystical. I recall slowly discovering the tattered vestiges of a veiled monk-like race, their echoed memories coming to me in fragments as chants ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQexC6FMAjg ) I recall it being night, and gazing at strange stars in a cold sky with a howling wind at my back as I floated out of a tunnel to find a hidden village clinging to the side of a valley… and surely that was a damp chill I actually felt on my skin at the time? I recall standing beside a lantern on a castle rampart made of hewn stone, looking far, far off into the distant horizon of a multi-colored sky, and wondering what was out there beyond the mountains that hemmed you in. I recall feeling completely alone, on a distant world, far far away… and I couldn’t think of any other place more entrancing to be. It was MY place that I could go back to time and time again, and even though after a time I knew the maps my heart, it still felt like there was more out there to discover.

It really was magic. It’s hard to encapsulate unless you were of the right age with the right mindset and played it at the right time. And the magic was so powerful as to make it enduring. To this day seeing a screenshot of the Sunspire or hearing a portion of one of those instantly recognizable UMX music tracks will immediately place me back there again.

To me, Na Pali is still out there, somewhere, waiting to be explored again.

I will take nearly any game today over Unreal and even Half Life.
And don't forget we're picking two legendary games from then, not even the awful rifraff like Chasm: The Rift. If we're doing that today, The Witcher 3 is better than any game from 1998. RDR is better than any game from 1998.

I agree. The Unreal kind of FPS was always a little too simple for me. The corridor run & gun usually got boring real quick.
I bought games like Unreal mostly for the technical qualities. It was amazing to experience the leaps in 3D graphics. Games like Unreal were nice tech demos but I never finished them (IIRC).

Half-Life was the first step in the right direction of a more story-driven experience, then another huge step with Deus Ex and nowadays most shooters luckily have a lot more to offer than just kaboom.

I like open world, I like the skills and perks we get in modern FPS games. Progression is more fun that way.

And in terms of technical advancements, they're not just fluff but they do contribute to gameplay directly in so far as richer, more detailed environments with lots of objects naturally increase the fidelity of the gameplay (more cover options, more vertical gameplay etc.).

I, for one, definitely do not wish for a revival of this super-simple run & gun corridor shooter style. I much prefer the variety of styles and actual stories we are getting in most modern shooters.
There are modern stinkers, of course, but it was the same back then, maybe even worse because the budgets and risks were much lower. We had some real garbage back then.

Maybe the best example for a positive evolution in the genre would be the Wolfenstein franchise. The original Wolf 3D was as awesome back in its day as was RtCW some 15 years ago and now TNO, TOB and TNC.
However, as awesome as Wolf 3D was in its day, I would never want original Wolfenstein gameplay back though.

Since when the fuck do you make so much sense? Your 80th birthday give you some wise old-man insight or something? I'm pretty sure in today's hipster wannabe gamer culture older always equals better. ALWAYS.

I also like cars with power steering over legacy models, but there's some to be said to ride around in something from the 1950's for an afternoon.

I remember trying Unreal and thinking it was Quake, slightly tweaked. Played it some, but went back to Quake. They were released close to each other and I played Quake for a while before trying Unreal.

Wouldn't comparing it to something that came out 6 months later be revisionist history, because it's comparing the product not to its direct peers but something that came out a good amount later?

It was closer to Quake 2 than to Half Life.
Unreal sucked hard after Witcher 3 came out.

I mean, don't get me wrong, I think that Half Life blew it away, too, but that was six months later. Or, for me at the time, an entirely different school year. They didn't feel like peers to me, but like one closed a generation and one opened a generation. Innovation was happening so quickly back then.

People who gushed about Unreal had six months to live in that world before HL blew it apart. Back then, that was an extremely long time. It was only 24 months prior that DN3D came out.

Is its Return to Na Pali expansion worth it playing? I never played that.
Don't know if you call it an enhanced game addon but UT99 had a mod called Old-Skool which allowed you to play Unreal SP all the way, using the engine enhancements of UT (the original Unreal had *ahem* issues with open GL), it also used previously hidden animations like the pistol twirling in your hand. You could also opt to play with UT weapons and/or items.

Return to Na Pali was decent, but it was nothing new just more of what you had in the base Unreal game. They tried to put in a little more personality for the character with voice-overs, but nothing great. The open air fight with the Marines was amazing, too bad then that they were only used in that ONE level, WTF?! (But you could play Marine Match instead of Bot Match)
