Middle-earth: Shadow of War Free Weekend

Middle-earth: Shadow of War can be played for free this weekend on Steam, offering the chance to sample the Tolkien-inspired action/adventure that recently dropped its microtransactions. The game is also on sale if you enjoy the taste this provides. Here's a bit on the game:
Go behind enemy lines to forge your army, conquer Fortresses and dominate Mordor from within. Experience how the award winning Nemesis System creates unique personal stories with every enemy and follower, and confront the full power of the Dark Lord Sauron and his Ringwraiths in this epic new story of Middle-earth.

In Middle-earth™: Shadow of War™, nothing will be forgotten.

I already bought the Gold edition for about $40 from Amazon, soooo how about the same deal for FarCry 5? Hm, Ubi? Hello? I got $40 here telling me they would love to be yours - for FC5 Gold edition!

I am not willing to forgive them putting the game out as pay-to-win with gambling boxes then only walking it back once the money started to dry up. It's a no sale for me at any price.

Pay to win in an easy single player game? lol. The loot boxes were there for people that have more money then sense. Was it ever really a factor? Just ignore it and play the game. But go save the world, why not.

There is a multiplayer component, in which the player with more legendary orcs in their army has a distinct advantage, which means that through the gambling mechanic someone could pay for an advantage. And despite what people say about "Just ignoring" the gambling aspect, Monolith itself admitted that having it ruined the nemesis system and devalued much of the gameplay in singleplayer. They had to patch the game once microtransactions were taken out to make the end game less of a grind and more fulfilling. That doesn't sound to me like the Mordor Casino was ever meant to be "just optional" to me. My feeling is that Monolith never wanted the market in there to be begin with and removed them as soon as their evil shithead overlords Warner Bros allowed them to take them out.

You know, to this day no one can say how this was pay to win and not pay to skip the game?

I mean, I purchased 0 boxes in the entire time that I played the game, I completed it, I even got the "true" ending. Never once did I even feel compelled to buy a box with money. Hell, I only actually purchased one box with the in-game currency that was effectively shooting out of dead Orcs and I only did it to 'advance' past the tutorial bit about it.

FYI if you're thinking about downloading this:

1. the download is 106GB on Steam
2. apparently it's not a "free weekend" but just a limited demo of the first chapter tutorial.

Hope this saves you the 2 min I just wasted realizing this.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I played the first one for a couple of hours until the boring repetitiveness kicked in. So this is an easy skip for me.

I played the first one to completion, getting over 100h out of it, so this is an easy purchase for me - had just been waiting for a discount

There's an FOV slider on the first page of the options screen. This was added via patch months ago.

Definitely a good game, everything from the first title just cranked up a few notches. Now that the loot boxes are a non issue...

You generally don't think of FOV in a third person game, but set wrong as a default and it can make you feel like you can't see half of what you should be able to. The last 3rd person game that had me frustrated by its claustrophobic FOV was the original Dead Space when it first launched on PC. Luckily you could fix it with a config file change.

... it only needs to drop to the same price of €4.99 for the GOTY as its predecessor.

Looking forward to diving into this now now that it is a proper game and not a vector for gambling revenue and microtransacrions.

Game is good but suffers from major FOV consolitus. I swear it feels like 40 FOV half the time, can't see a damn thing around you, like you're wearing blinders.
