This comparison is so cynical that it earns you a place on my ignore list.
Car deaths and gun deaths. One of these things is not like the other.
What would be similar is the times someone intentionally used their car as a weapon to kill someone. How often does that happen?
* Googles *
Looks like a couple hundred over the past decade worldwide. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands have been killed by guns worldwide over the same period. Let's say that again:
Hundreds vs. hundreds of thousands.
Vehicles are safer now than ever before.
After total deaths peaked in 72 (~55k) they have trended down to where they are today. Take into account the population increase (+113 million) and increase in highway mileage driven and it's clear that there has been huge strides in automobile safety.
TLDR deaths per million during that time frame dropped from 260 to 110.

37,461
The number of people killed on US roads in 2016.(Men, Women and Children)
If saving lives is your end game....
Might as well ban motor vehicles and save all those lives eh?
15,549 (excluding suicides)
US gun deaths in 2017
I find it ironic that this number draws howls of outrage while the first one (much larger) hardly registers a blip on the radar.
I'd say motor vehicles are more of a threat to US lives than guns.

There are but they are much much fewer.
Shootings in Canada
I think it's a few things that contribute to it, I've never really researched into it because I have better things to do but here's my SWAG opinion (Scientific Wild Ass Guess)
#1) Gun Control, I own a few rifles and shotguns. I had to do a course and get my PAL (Possession and Acquisition License) from our RCMP. Next, our guns are unrestricted and restricted. All hand guns are restricted and while it's easy for a criminal to get one, the average household has absolutely no use for a handgun because you'd have to drive between your house and a driving range only with it under lock and key. Since most school shootings are disgruntled teenagers, most parents who have disgruntled teenagers don't have weapons. Rifles are limited to 5 shots. Most of my rifles are world war 1 era with single shot and scopes. If you can't hit a deer/antelope/bear with 5 shots for a kill you are a terrible hunter.
Rifles are limited to 5 shots by a pin welded into the magazine of the weapons. I can own an AR15 with 5 shot clips and take out my PIN. Criminals can easily do this but again, comes down to licensing and acquisition and such. They have to steal the weapons to do this most of the time.
#2)Our population is much lower, so way less chance of it happening from crazies.. but even if you look at that the Percentage numbers don't jive.
#3) Mentality. There's a very big difference between canadians and americans. I find it weird the disconnect.. I have no real proof/articles/etc. But there seems to be a really weird mentality about disrespect and other things that escalate in the USA versus Canada. Shit heads live everywhere but I'm always shocked, especially after working in the shittiest bars in my youth how different people are in the USA about simple things like spilling someones drink.

Great freakin' movie, like Citizen Kane you can watch it over and over and see new little parts.
