Out of the Blue

We haven't had a repeat incident with Jedi the Jindo since I wrote about the recent incidents where he turned on the Gunnar-man. A couple of bits of advice on the topic suggested this may just be play fighting for Jedi, and the more I consider this, the more I believe it's correct. It pretty nicely explains the paradoxical aspects of this, from why he would attack his best friend to why Gunnar has escaped each time unharmed. Jedi has another doggie friend that's an absolutely crazy poodle/sheepdog mix, and he roughhouses with her in a similar way, and nobody thinks much of it because they are both so young and active. Gunnar is dealing with this by being extra-cautious when everyone's off the leash, but our walks continue to work fine, so I'm a little less alarmed by it all at this point.

Did it twice a week for 3 1/2 years. But he donated blood, not plasma. You'd be surprised what a person is willing to do to help keep other people alive.

Nah, he was doing plasma donations (link to Sydney Morning Herald article, which describes the apheresis procedure).

Every fortnight, his blood (like that of all anti-D donors) is extracted at the blood bank, then his plasma is separated from his red blood cells; then his red blood cells are reinjected to prevent anaemia. The whole process is "a major impost", points out the Red Cross's Robert Flower. "It's not just five minutes every 10 years; it's half a day once a fortnight. It's an extraordinary level of dedication."

The plasma donation is a bigger production, as it takes hours instead of minutes. But I don't think he could have donated whole blood instead of plasma twice a week even if he wanted to, especially not for 60 years straight, not unless they took 1/4 size donations for his special case.

The first book barely touches on it, but one of the odd/interesting things in the "Altered Carbon" universe is humans have found significant evidence for a seemingly extinct but highly advanced Martian civilization. The "stack" technology is adapted from discovered Martian artifacts. All the planets which have been populated by humans were found via coordinates found in Martian relics. The second and third novels feature Martian technology much more prominently. I haven't seen much sci-fi which featured a significant Martian civilization outside maybe War of the Worlds and John Carter of Mars...

Mass Effect.... anyhow the show touched very little on this (much more interesting) element.

I cant believe it either. Either SyFy is notoriously incompetent making deals like that, or has no fucking clue what a good show is.
At least theres still a chance that it gets picked up by others. But many other awesome shows didnt, so you cant be sure.
If this gets canceled and Discovery keeps going, I am losing my hope in humanity.

In the US, at least, I think the Red Cross and most local blood banks (mine, at least) make you wait eight weeks between whole blood donations. Platelets are once a week, plasma is twice a week.
Now that you say it, I think you are right. I just have an appointment set in my Goggle calendar and do a walk-in when it comes up. Plasma is a one week wait in the US also.

Lives saved in Australia has nothing to do with the excellent work Planned Parenthood does in the USA.
Australia averages 3.7 million abortions a year, all thanks to the fine men and women of their version of Planned Parenthood, which is the god awesome best.

I liked Altered Carbon as well but it isn't a space opera like The Expanse. Which is what I really crave currently. Krypton is there, sure, but that's not really... I mean, they didn't even enter space once yet.

And with worse I mean the feeling. Altered Carbon was neat but it had no greater ambition behind it. Maybe a season 2 will change that.....

I watched the TV series and then read the three books. I enjoyed both, but thought they were only okay to good, not great.

The series is based on the first book alone. There were some changes, but I thought it followed the book about as closely as you could expect. Both the book and the series were punctuated with violence and sex. This is neither good or bad, simply a matter of taste.

Apparently SyFy only had first-run-rights to the Expanse. It was a shitty deal for them. Tons of money and they were really limited in how they could profit from it.
