Why not go 200+ deg FOV like some other HMDs have.

Form factor - "hammerhead" is bulky and heavy.
Optics - they struggle with perfecting the current 90-110 deg of this gen headsets.
Perception - It is not settled how wide a FOV is needed. 140 could be plenty to give the "I'm there" effect.

It would wrap around, like these https://www.starbreeze.com/virtual-reality/ not like a hammerhead shark.
There's also https://www.gamespot.com/articles/pimax-8k-vr-headset-offers-impressive-200-degree-f/1100-6453906/

Why not just straight up cover the eye's entire FOV, then work on upping the res with every version. Someday HMDs will be as small as eye patches, just big enough to cover each eye.

BTW the Pimax 8K is a misnomer, 2x4K is only around 16MP, 4x4K is around 33MP or 8K.

I think the major driver is hitting the consumer sweet spot. Just because they CAN doesn't mean that people can afford to....

Like, they want to target the fastest double GPU systems for 5% of the consumer base or do they want to target the 20% customer base?

Personally, with the RIFT I don't mind the "Bulky goggles" effect.. your body just thinks its wearing a form of goggles much Akin to old ski/racing goggles. Being able to see some things in your peripherals would be a nice to have but how much FOV do people actually use depends on the person I think.
