I moved to BC 3 years ago. All of the senior tech positions I applied for were salaries less than 1/2 of Seattle. I ended up consulting from home for a US based company making more than double the best Canadian offer I got. Add to that, Vancouver cost of living is straight out of the Twilight Zone. The worst part is that Canadians will complain a little about it, but are ultimately fine with things. I love Canada, but this (and the drug epidemic) is why I don't live there anymore.

There is a cost to such a heavy brain drain: governments spend billions subsidizing the cost of university education, while students who go on to work for foreign companies help fuel the economic growth of those countries

That's my major beef with it. If you want to leave to go work in another county than as far as I'm concerned you owe the real cost of your university education here, not the subsidized amount you paid. There should be a requirement that for every year of university you have to work for at least 2 years here or pay the actual costs instead. Fuck if I'm paying taxes so some kid can get a cheap education only to not pay back into the system.

Canadians are fine, it's just the Silicon Valley move-in's that I don't like.

Alright smart kids. Come down here so you can be an arrogant dickweed and talk to your Barista's or Waiters like you're a higher species.

They're Canadians, not French.

There are French Canadians... I am!

Ohh wait, we're already got plenty of people like that in the area.
