Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire DLC Detailed

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is not due for release until May 8th, but Obsidian Entertainment reveals post-release plans for the RPG sequel. They offer details on three different DLC packs to support the game over the remainder of this year. These will be sold individually or as a season pass, and those who backed the project at the appropriate tiers are to receive all three as part of their purchase. Here are the details:

Obsidian Entertainment, developer of critically acclaimed role-playing games, in partnership with indie publisher Versus Evil, today announced plans for three exciting, in-depth expansion packs for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. The expansion packs will include new quests that will add to the lore of the Deadfire, new areas to discover, new secrets to reveal, and a whole host of new characters to meet and challenges to overcome!

The first downloadable-content pack (DLC), ‘Beast Of Winter‘ will be available in July 2018, and will take your party to an island populated by a mysterious doomsday cult, that hides an ancient secret. Players will get to experience adventuring in ‘The Beyond,’ a mysterious dimension populated by ancient souls and filled with devilish challenges.

The second DLC ‘Seeker, Slayer, Survivor’ available in September 2018, is a combat-focused expansion taking place on a previously undiscovered island that will challenge the martial prowess of your party, and your tactical skills as a commander, as you embark on a mission to rediscover ancient relics, and pit your party against Eora’s most skilled and savage.

The third DLC, ‘The Forgotten Sanctum’ available in November 2018, will test your party’s allegiance and morality in a quest to help (or obstruct) the great wizards of Eora. Will you befriend, betray or befuddle these venerable mystics as you uncover secrets lost to the generations? The consequences of your actions will be felt across the Deadfire Archipelago whatever you decide.

I'm wrapping up my last playthrough of PoEt 1 now, with an utterly beastly Ranger setup.

The real question for me now is, May 8th; Rogue Team, Ranger Team, or Tank Chanter Team? Those are probably my three most enjoyable characters. Rogue is apparently the 'weakest' class currently in the PoEt 2 beta, but who knows how that'll play out on release day, plus that weakness is relative anyway. I suspect any class setup can finish the game without issues.

The Watcher is probably best, story wise, as a Cipher, but I don't find that class to be that entertaining. Stun, Disintegrate, shotguns, repeat. Zzzz.

I'll probably start 3 games in Pillars 2 and pick one to complete the game with after getting a real feel for the game and earning a few levels in each class.

*EDIT* I'm not sure if they started out that way, but under the current PoEt 1 patch, Druids are uterly ridiculous casters... I may end up just doing a Druid to steamroll the first game. Choices, choices...

Got the typical PC pessimism. "Cut content confirmed." Ugh. Pillars of Eternity offered a wealth of content for the price and I'm sure the base game here will too. Considering it's an independent studio and Tyranny sold less than expected this is definitely one I am supporting with a day one purchase.

Yeah, it might .

Seriously though... I'm actually glad it won't be taking too long.

I want to play the complete version with all DLCs included so a shorter wait for them to wrap it up is better than a longer wait even if it is a bit shady to charge extra for content that most likely could have been in the main game on release day (at least the first DLC must basically be all but ready to go at launch).

All three this year? OK. Cut content confirmed.

Well, most studios seem to be putting people onto the DLC teams as the main game is being finished up, these days. Was some content cut from the main game due to time/budget constraints? Probably.

At the same time, it's Obsidian, so some/all of the DLCs might get delayed until 2019, will that make you feel better about this?
