PC Shenmue I and II Announced

SEGA announces Shenmue I and II will be rereleased for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 this year, offering the chance to revisit these action/adventure games first released for Dreamcast around the turn of the millennium. This trailer offers a look at the game, saying the prerelease footage represents a work-in-progress. There's already a Steam page for this, but it does not say whether to expect this for macOS and Linux, or just Windows. Here's the announcement:
SEGA® Europe Ltd. is proud to announce that the pioneering epic saga Shenmue ™ I & II is to be re-released for a new generation. Get ready to go on a thrilling voyage across faithful recreations of Japan and Hong Kong, China, in a timeless tale of revenge and mystery when Shenmue I & II launches both physically and digitally on PlayStation® 4 and Xbox® One with a PC release on Steam in 2018. Check out the announcement trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihC52HOx7zA

Since their original release, Shenmue I & II have established a passionate following and are revered as one of gaming’s greatest series of all time. These revolutionary masterpieces deliver a gripping story of retribution as Ryo Hazuki sets out to avenge his father’s death and attempts to unravel the secrets behind a mysterious artefact known as the Dragon Mirror.

Shenmue I & II comes complete with the original feature set that defined modern gaming, including enthralling jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, and RPG elements in addition to memorable mini-games. Shenmue I & II is set within engrossing real-time open worlds that feel truly alive thanks to day-to-night cycles and weather changes, with a population of civilians who follow their own schedules.

This is the definitive version of these all-time classics and will be the best Shenmue experience to date. The re-release will stay true to the originals with modernised features including fully scalable screen resolution, choice of modern or classic control schemes, PC graphics options, an updated user interface and the option to enjoy either the original Japanese or English voiceovers.

The physical and digital editions will be available to pre-order from first party stores, Steam and US and EMEA retailers soon. For all the latest information on Shenmue I & II, head over to: https://shenmue.sega.com/

Not much of a game but an amazing achievement anyway (I never played II). I lived in Japan 20 years after the game was set but I swear some rural and industrial parts of that country are almost exactly as they were in that title, or at least in terms of architecture and weird independent combinis with fridges full of fish products.

If shenmue 3 is any good, I'm sure there will be many new to the series who are intrigued and would want to go back to be filled in on the story. So it's cool that they will all be available on the same device.

Big if at this point.

Maybe they won’t make a lot from it but I’m excited about this! I never did finish number 2 and my Dreamcast drive has pretty much failed...

I was a fan of Shenmue, so I am pretty stoked about this. Not sure how much longer the drive on my Dreamcast is going to last!

That said, eh, I dunno if this is going to make a huge splash with PC gamers this many years later. It was a very different game, I can't really think of another like it and it never saw a PC port (that I know of) unlike games like Final Fantasy VII etc.

The only people who are gonna buy this are nostalgia nerds and people who have heard about the series and never played it before (probably a number in the 10's to 100's of thousands), perhaps in preparation for the sequel thats coming out soon. Even if it sells only 10k copies, they will make money from this. They literally didn't do anything besides add higher res output and combine both games on one disc. It's basically like playing the games through an upscaled emulator on your console, likely sourced from the (excellent) original xbox re-releases.
