Steam Spy Ending Due to Steam Privacy Changes

The Steam Blog announces additions to the Profile Privacy Settings Page with new options for Steam users to restrict the information Valve shares about their activity with the public. They also say they are working on adding an invisible mode to appear offline, which hopefully will not infringe on any 20th century patents held by AOL. As a consequence of recent changes, a tweet from Steam Spy reveals this is going to put an end to their service of reporting on game ownership and activity of Steam users. They note this is not due to the changes Valve discusses in their blog post, but because of an additional unannounced change that makes the contents of everyone's Steam library hidden by default. Here's word on the Steam changes:
Today’s update expands on your Profile Privacy Settings Page, giving you more control over the privacy of your Steam account. With more detailed descriptions of what profile information is included in each category, you will be able to manage how you are viewed by your friends, or the wider Steam Community.

You can now select who can view your profile’s “game details”; which includes the list of games you have purchased or wishlisted, along with achievements and playtime. This setting also controls whether you’re seen as “in-game” and the title of the game you are playing.

Additionally, regardless of which setting you choose for your profile’s game details, you now have the option to keep your total game playtime private. You no longer need to nervously laugh it off as a bug when your friends notice the 4,000+ hours you've put into Ricochet.

Looking ahead a little, we are also working on a new “invisible” mode in addition to the already existing “online”, “away” and “offline” presence options. If you choose to set yourself to invisible, you’ll appear as offline, but you’ll still be able to view your friends list, send and receive messages. Sometimes you’re feeling social, and sometimes you’re not; this setting should help Steam users be social on their own terms. We hope to have this feature ready for beta release soon.

Like many Steam features, these privacy options come directly from user feedback. If you would like to join that conversation, as always, we welcome you to visit the Steam Discussions and add your feedback.

So in addition to having a horrible to use web site, a marketplace full of shovelware and scams that makes discoverability impossible and is killing indies, with some of the worst customer support in the entire games industry, Valve has now destroyed the ability for the tools that gave a modicum of transparency into their black box to function. They could have worked on a private API to allow these places to work but didn't. It's almost like they're trying to hide away information that the big AAA publishers (who made up like 90% of Steam's revenue last year) keep trying to hide from the public.

"Our lord and saviour GabeN" is NOT your friend and never has been. Valve is in this for the money, the same as any AAA publisher people love to hate.

So more privacy is a bad thing. Got it.

Funny how some blame evil AAA publishers for this, others blame whiny "SJW" indie devs for this.

Everyone has a boogeyman. My guess is this is just about privacy and what's going on with other social networks, which Steam is as well as a store. EU regulations mandated this.

I just want to be able to not display as online without going into offline mode (which is a huge inconvenience). Between the groups I'm in and having to appear to work that I'm not gaming during the day (I'm not), I have to go through so many hoops. Since my son and I share our gaming computer, I can't stand it when people assume I'm playing Battlefield 1 at 2pm.

Sheep here! Baaaaaaaaaa!

Anyway I'm glad they're hiding our library contents - I don't want people seeing how much time I'm putting into 'House Party' and all the Japanese Anime nudie games. I mean... IF, you know, I actually played those games. Which I don't. At all.

Who fucks a give about SteamSpy? What counts is MOAR PRIVECEH!!!11

Seriously, it was about fucking time Valve got off their lazy fat ass and gave us more options.
It is unbelievable that it has taken them this long to NOW finally implement basic privacy features that should have been there since launch. Pathetic.
Just about every simple web forum has had an invisible mode since the beginning of time. Steam gets it in 2018 (maybe) after almost 15 years of live service. Fuckin' A. Even patheticer.

SteamSpy is collateral damage. Zero fucks given.

LOLZ ... ironically BF1 is not even on Steam but on Origin and the Origin client has had an invisible mode since launch (or shortly thereafter).

I know, you probably added it as a non-Steam game or just gave it as an example w/o considering that BF1 is not even on Steam. However, ESPECIALLY with regard to BF1, it would be easy as pie to play it "anonymously" because it's on Origin that's had a freakin' invisible mode for years already.

Funny that Valve was able to whip this up in the two weeks since the Collateral Analytics story broke, but 14 years later, no Half Life 3.

This is horrible for the consumer and I'm sure it will affect https://steamdb.info/ which will suck.

I assume this is because of the new EU directive on data (GDPR) as it becomes enforceable in May.

Many companies are beefing up their account options to allow better visibility of what data they collect and give users control over it.

Yes all the websites which scrape everyone's public Steam profile including yours, to build data and serve ads, will be suffering heavily from this change. Horrible for the consumer? It's great for consumers, they now by default hide their profile game data from non-friends - they have to opt in to allow the public to see their game history and game list. This is a good change and should have happened years ago. Pity about losing that game sale data, for sure, but I still prefer my information being private by default.

Yeah this, the UK implementation at least is substantially stricter and enforceable with much bigger fines than we had previously - which I read was already much more than the data protection in US.

Like others are mentioning, it's probably been in the works for a long while, due to the EU.
