Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered Edition Announced

THQ Nordic announces plans for a rerelease of Red Faction Guerrilla, which will be unashamedly titled the Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered Edition. This is planned for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 in Q2 of this year. This open-world third-person shooter sequel was originally released back in 2009, and here's a thumbnail description in case your grandpa is napping and can't tell you about this one: "Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Red Faction: Guerrilla still defines the limits of destruction-based game-play with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerrilla-style combat, and true physics-based destruction." And here's word on what will be different when you get your ass to Re-Mars:
Re-Mars-tered Features

  • Fully reworked graphics – Heavily reworked textures and graphic features adding for example specular maps.
  • Improved shadow rendering
  • Improved Lighting
  • Shader & Postprocessing rework
  • Native 4k support for the finest up to date mars destruction experience ever
  • Console platforms: TBD

This game occasionally gets pulled out at LANs. It always ends up that we keep trying to see if we can sneak up on someone and smoosh them with the hammer. The ridiculous destruction makes it hard for anyone to camp, so USUALLY there isn't anyone with a huge score lead. This update is a nice, if unneccessary, bonus. Are they maybe exploring a proper open-world sequel?

According to IGN, Nordic has confirmed that it includes all DLC and that it will be a free upgrade for existing (Steam) owners.

That's really cool. Thanks Nordic!!

Guerrilla was a ton of fun at the time. Don't think I'd buy it again. Got plenty of other things to play in my backlog. I'll stick with the fond memories.

I would guess this also means that they got all new DLC lined up to be released at a later date like the TQ Anniversary Ragnarök expansion.

It's a really fun game, but if all they're doing is adding some shadows, specular maps and lighting, I wouldn't give more than five bucks for it.

And textures. Perhaps this isn't about us here, the old guys and maybe some new blood wanting to have a taste of this with some updated gfx.

"Heavily reworked textures"

This should change/improve the look quite bit if done right.

I loved the original Guerilla enough to buy this again - I would love to destroy some fully destructible Martian oppressor bases again. I even loved the janky driving. And call me crazy but I take this re-release as hope for a proper sequel to Guerilla one day, not that Armageddon travesty which abandoned almost everything that made Guerilla great.

I loved the original Red Faction. It had great world destruction and had other pretty original mechanics. Multiplayer was also ahead of its time. Guerilla only has building destruction, which to me makes for a much less dynamic game and reduces the feeling of really having an impact on the world. Also, Guerilla's setting is bland looking, repetitive and mostly empty. The gameplay is in the same boat. You do the exact same cookie cutter objectives for what seems like way too many times. I also don't like the switch to third person and the overall "consolisation" of the title. I really can't understand why people can stand this game, but I'm definitely in the minority. I guess it had nice graphics at the time, but the constant generic-boring-empty-desert look isn't going to win any awards regardless of what this graphical upgrade can do.

Did we play the same Red Faction? Sure it had the "geomod" ability to blow holes in terrain, but single player at least it almost never did that, and multiplayer was okay but nothing special.

Guerilla was tons of fun. I just wish the AI and the hit & run mechanics were a little more developed and a little less Grand Theft Auto.

Zero Punctuation's review of it is actually spot on.

I agree. It was a cool idea, but it would have broken any level design, so it was used sparingly.

Guerilla was mostly just breaking stuff designed to be broken. Great, I can hammer apart an entire building, but why? It's fun at first, but the rest of the game left me seriously wanting. I probably only put 2 hours into it, because what I was doing other than hammering wasn't striking me as much fun (no pun intended.)

In FC5, I'm driving trucks into small trees and breaking them apart, somewhat surprised I can do that. Kind of sad, when you think about it - of course I should be able to, and in reality, they should be falling, not breaking apart. So I applaud RF for having done this. But it just never felt like it added up to much.

Yes it did. It got old after 5 minutes. That's the sort of useless grind I just can't stand in games.

I never played Red Faction in their prime... Though I played a later one, with less building explosions (but with some nano rebuilding) which I ended up enjoying (may have even gotten a second playthrough)... So I'm happy with this news ; )

Though really, most remasters update textures, and some other minor bits, but not models, so the end result ends up looking nearly as dated as the original... And that was a turn off for me for this game/series.
