Quake Champions Spring Update Launches; Cheaper Mode Comes Tomorrow

Bethesda announces the launch of a March update for Quake Champions, bringing new cosmetics to id Software's Early Access multiplayer shooter along with three new gameplay modes. The new modes are Instagib, Ranked 2v2, and No Abilities mode, which just relies on shooting. They also announce plans to launch a new Scalebearer Pack at 1:00 pm EDT tomorrow, which will offer a way to get started with the game and two starter champions for just $4.99. This trailer celebrates all the news, and here are the details:
SCALEBEARER PACK DETAILS:
Available for $4.99, the Scalebearer Pack offers players instant, early access to the game along with two starter Champions, Vanity items, cosmetics and more. The pack also includes a three-day rental of all Champions so players can try-before they buy. The Scalebearer Pack will be available tomorrow, March 16, at 1:00 pm eastern via Steam and Bethesda.net, and includes:

  • Instant access to Quake Champions
  • Two permanently-unlocked Champions: Scalebearer and Ranger
  • Ranger’s “Spoils of War” vanity sword and helmet
  • Three Ranger armor shaders
  • Three Backpacks

MARCH UPDATE DETAILS:

  • INSTAGIB – The fast-moving, gib-tastic classic hits Quake Champions, introducing a fun, fast and casual game where every shot is a one-hit kill. Players will start each match with the only weapons available – the Rail Gun and the Gauntlet -- and there are no weapon, health, armor, or powerup pickups. Champions still have active and passive abilities, so one-shot grenades from Keel and insta-kill totems from Galena add to the flesh-chewing madness.
  • 2v2 TDM RANKED MODE – It’s like Duel mode, but it’s 2v2. Players can team-up with a buddy and face off against other dynamic duos from around the world, strategizing Champion and Ability combinations that will push them to the top of the global leaderboard.
  • SPRING COSMETICS – We’ve had enough snow and we’re ready for Spring. Quake Champions’ new Spring cosmetics lets players outfit Champions and weapons in a colorful collection of happy pastels and floral patterns. Spring-themed profile icons, name plates, and festive headwear, including a unicorn hat, bird’s nest, and more, round-out our Spring Collection. Go get yourself some pinks and purples and make some black-and-blues.
  • NO ABILITIES MODE – Party like it’s 1999, Quake Dads. Quake Champions can now go old school with the option to turn off active Champion abilities via custom games.

I played 4 maps of instagib last night, won the 3rd
And did it rocking my vanilla default character against a bunch of highly decorated dudes, felt good.

It was fun, but yes, all of the stupid abilities are in insta as well. So there are plenty of other ways to die that aren't a rail. And some big dumb robot can make a shield to block a rail, another champ can disappear, another teleport...
That shit shouldn't be in insta.

Averages 300 players per day.

A majority of people who are playing this game are doing so for free through the bethesda launcher, so the steam numbers will never be accurate here.

I wonder if...

1. Turning off player abilities (FINALLY!) also equalizes character movement (speed/jumping, etc).
2. If you can combine the no abilities mode with instagib.

As a huge Quake fan (all of the previous games), I was looking forward to QC, but then after I tried the beta, my excitement was quickly dashed. Adding in popular game modes and allowing us to turn off the abilities has my eyebrow raised, however.

Still missing mod/mapping support though, which is almost unforgivable for a Quake game.

Forgot I was in the open beta, I ain't paying $30.00 to try out a new mode.

You can still play Quake Champions free via the (shitty) Bethesda launcher if you've played it in beta before. Otherwise it's in paid early access on Steam until they release it, when it will go F2P. That'll take a while yet, seeing as they still have to include CTF too.

As such, it having low player counts right now makes sense. Only people who REALLY want to play a new Quake have bought in (about 4x more than Lawbreakers at 285k). The rest will only try it when it actually releases for free, I'd imagine.

Ahh I forgot about the launcher, thanks for the heads up.
Just noticed I didn't have the game on Steam and it was priced to buy currently with no indication of F2P.

I played 25 hours or so and it was great fun but I really struggled to stay in the upper half of the scoreboard. The player base is very thin, though. But it's fun to go back there from time to time when the alternatives these days are PUBG and Overwatch (Liked Overwatch but absolutely hated PUBG)

I only just now noticed the addition of Instagib.

I'm only slightly ashamed to admit that I'll be reinstalling to try that out.

When I was scrolling down quickly I skim-read "boring cosmetics" somehow in place of "bringing new cosmetics". That about sums it up though, this game has been a total bummer. I still adore Quake and to a degree Quake 2; I want my brown doom and gloom with heads flying off to the sound of industrial noise... this shit is like if Hot Topic was creepin' on fucking Tracer dressed up in a Hello Kitty outfit - fuck that shit. The things people do to get big on Twitch...

I guess Quake just always has to compete with Unreal engine games- Lawbreakers was DOA and they just have to follow suit.

They should have never made quake champions f2p, quake and unreal were offline games both in single and multiplayer incarnations. If you are going to make an arena shooter, don't do it f2p.

The reality is old quake players like myself were expecting the future of gaming to be along the lines as it was in the 90's before the retarded masses showed up and fucked up gaming. F2p, mmo, steam all are signs of mass dumbness regarding technology.

Reality is quake should have never become a locked down f2p ridden fuck fest, it should have had a level editor /w sdk. Quake was what it was due to mods, level editing and a great multiplayer community. Take that all away and you don't have much game since quake 3 was roughly a tech demo and the quake community populated it with maps, skins, mods like threewave, rocket arena and opm.

I have no fucking clue what the people at bethesda are thinking but they are completely out of touch.

ouch. i guess i'll still get in a few rounds just to see the difference stepping up from a five year old video card and 10 year old processor makes to the game, but if i wanted to just endlessly get my balls stomped on i'd just fire up quake live.

i'm looking forward to booting this up when i get my new video card slotted in tomorrow. instagib rules, and everyone has been clamoring for 1999 mode since beta.

I would rather have them reboot single-player Quake like they successfully rebooted Doom.

i'd like this too, but when i think about it, i really don't know why? doom did everything a quake reboot would do in terms of action, use of vertical space, and so on. i guess just without the confused techno-fantasy-gothic aesthetic? in the meantime, hopefully Amid Evil is good, and Witchfire looks pretty cool albeit probably years away.

This Blizzard-y Easter bullshit doesnt fit with the vibe of the game whatsoever and is obviously pandering to the family friendly image that games like Overwatch have. It's pretty repulsive coming from a game like quake, IMO.

The skins aren't for a 'family audience', people in general like interesting looking cosmetic skins. I checked out the game when it was in beta, and the only skins they had were basically palette swaps. That's insane for a F2P game; the revenue stream lives off of well done cosmetics.

Not that it matters really- the game is dead before it even launches. Interest is non-existent. I guess Quake just always has to compete with Unreal engine games- Lawbreakers was DOA and they just have to follow suit.

Guess they see Blizzard's strategy of catering their games to a family audience as successful enough to copy.
