But hey, it sounds really cool, might as well get some clicks out of it.

How do you get the malware onto an air gapped PC to begin with? And it's only good up to 9m. It sounds really cool but it's wholly impractical.

If you have your air-gapped machines in the same room as your networked machines, it would work.
- The network machine gets infected
- The malware then maps the network
- The malware lays low until it communicates with a machine that's not on the network (thus, airgapped)
- The malware then infiltrates and extracts what it can, forwarding it on to a central server so that the malware author has access to it

Wow. I knew about MAGNETO, but none of the rest:

The paper, titled, "MOSQUITO: Covert Ultrasonic Transmissions between Two Air-Gapped Computers using Speaker-to-Speaker Communication," was written by Mordechai Guri, Yosef Solwicz, Andrey Daidakulov, Yuval Elovici, who have developed a number other notable side-channel attack techniques.

These include: ODINI, a way to pass data between Faraday-caged computers using electrical fields; MAGNETO, a technique for passing data between air-gapped computers and smartphones via electrical fields; and FANSMITTER, a way to send acoustic data between air-gapped computers using fans.
