White House Games Summit Details

Reuters has more details on today's planned meeting at the White House with game industry representatives to discuss attempts to shift blame for gun violence onto video games. The meeting was called by President Trump who expressed a need for the kind of rating system for games that's already in place, though some parents, such as the president, don't heed it. "I look at some of the things he’s watching," Trump said last week about his 11 year-old son's media (presumably games). "And I say, how is that possible?" The new report notes additional attendees and sets an agenda for the meeting, saying it will be the first of several. There's more on this in The Washington Post where they also have an unconfirmed list of attendees, including those who will be across the table in an anti-gaming camp:

Trump has invited video game executives like Robert Altman, the CEO of ZeniMax, the parent company for games such as Fallout; Strauss Zelnick, the chief executive of Take Two Interactive, which is known for Grand Theft Auto, and Michael Gallagher, the leader of the Entertainment Software Association, a Washington-focused lobbying organization for the industry.

Three people familiar with the White House’s planning, but not authorized to speak on the record, confirmed those invitees. A spokeswoman for the White House declined to share a full list of participants on Wednesday. ESA confirmed its attendance this week, but the others did not respond to questions.

Opposite of them are expected to be some of the video-game industry's toughest critics, including Brent Bozell, the founder of the Parents Television Council, and Rep. Vicky Hartzler, a Republican from Missouri, the three people said. After another shooting — the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. — they each called on government to focus its attention on violent media rather than just pursuing new gun restrictions.

re: his 11 year old son, "How is it possible?"

It's possible because YOU (the parent of your son) BUY & ALLOW him to watch/play that kinda stuff! If it says rated M or AO... maybe don't let him play at 11 years old?!

I'm surprised there's no other comments about this quote blue put in above

On the off chance anyone wants to watch the video reviewed by the president and his staff, here it is. Goes without saying, NSFW.

Of course they did. I'm going to guess that Vicky Hartzler is also getting a ton of money from the NRA.

But we keep claiming we're a democracy. smh.

Clearly the gaming lobby needs to be spreading a lot more money around. That's what this is. It's Washington's way of telling them they want more money if the gaming industry wants to be left alone. 'Give us more money and we'll go back to blaming it on Satanists.'

Heh, Trump's going to start a bidding war between lobbyists. "Who can buy my support? Show me the money! Anything goes! I have no scruples!"

I'm pretty positive that's exactly what's going on.
That's why he called up all those gaming CEO's... "Come on over to the White House and let me know what you can do for me... if I don't like it I might come down hard on your industry."

Of course ZeniMax would be there. Whose board of directors include Cadet Bone Spurs' brother.
That might actually be a good thing (for once). We all know that the Trump infestation (aka. family) are full of greedy, greedy people and that games are a billion dollar industry. Maybe, just MAYBE Trump's brother at Zenimax might convince the Orange Gorilla to back off purely because it makes him so much money.

"rather than just pursuing new gun restrictions." Yes, of course. The best way to combat the problem we have of hundreds of millions of guns flooding the country, and they grow deadlier every year, and easier to get, is to investigate comic books, video games and porn. Everything except guns.

Also, they just need one person to bring a big white bristol board chart showing how violence has been going down steadily for the last 25 years. And then show a second chart that shows video game sales going steadily up for the past 25 years, and then just slam their fists on the desk and ask "Any questions!?"

That chart is hard to find.

Here's one.

Here's another.

Neither is completely satisfying.

The best thing that could come from this is that the current ratings system is actually enforced.

Hear me out.

I'd rather my 18+ game be actually targeted at people who are 18+, rather than just mindless kiddie shooters with lots of violence. I have this dream of a world where 18+ means games like The Witcher that are actually written for adults. Not written for teenagers, but with violence.

Paul Tassie of Forbes had a great run-down of who's there.

They didn't even get titles or genders right of the games industry folks.

And, of course:
Lt. Col Dave Grossman (Retired), author of “On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society” and “Assassination Generation: Video Games, Aggression, and the Psychology of Killing.”

That latter book is literally about “how violent video games have ushered in a new era of mass homicide.” At least he’s not Jack Thompson?

Oh, yes! Because homicides have skyrocketed with the rising popularity of video games.

Oh, shoots. Actual data wrecking my theory!

How the trend line should look if games caused gun violence. (South Korea would be murder capital of the world )

How the trend line actually looks. Actually a slightly negative correlation.

I doubt he'd be interested - he does that in real life and faces few consequences. Although maybe if it featured Ivanka...

She's the first DLC.
