Defiance 2050 Announced

Trion Worlds announces Defiance 2050, an MMO sci-fi shooter coming to Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 this summer. This is a ground-up remake of the original Defiance, which launched in 2013 as a tie-in with a SyFy television series, and it is set 32 years from now (unless we missed 2048 intermediate games along the way). The Defiance 2050 Website is online, and registering there includes the possibility of being invited to the upcoming closed beta test. Here's the Defiance 2050 announce trailer, and here's word:
Trion Worlds is thrilled to reveal the next title set in the Defiance universe! A reimagined sci-fi shooter experience for current gaming hardware, Defiance 2050 takes the exciting story and groundbreaking gameplay of the original game, and gives it a major overhaul. Defiance 2050 launches on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this summer.

Twenty years have passed since the catastrophic Arkfall event left millions of Votans dead and Earth terraformed into a nearly unrecognizable post-apocalyptic landscape. In Defiance 2050’s version of San Francisco, players are transported to a dynamic open world where they can explore and fight in skirmishes and story-driven missions on an epic scale. Players will engage in massive cooperative battles with their friends, utilize hundreds of distinct weapons and skills, and take on huge alien threats as they explore transformed futuristic environments.

Defiance 2050 recreates the original game from the ground up to be representative of the current generation of consoles. From updated textures to improved resolutions and framerates, Defiance 2050 is a marked improvement over the original Defiance.

Defiance 2050 is more than just a simple graphical remaster, as the game’s systems have gotten major improvements to create the definitive version of the game. Today’s consoles and PCs enable the dev team to implement features and upgrades that fans of the game have been clamoring for, while advancements in hardware allow for action on an even larger scale than before, with more players able to take to the battlefield in white-knuckled combat.

“Defiance 2050 has been created with the original game’s community in mind,” said Matt Pettit, the Producer of Defiance 2050. “The team has been listening to feedback and taking some helpful cues from fans to really create the Defiance experience that people have wanted for a long time. Defiance 2050 marks a shift for the game that goes beyond the change from the year 2046 to 2050, and we are absolutely thrilled to hear what people think of it.”

Prior to launch, Defiance 2050 will be entering a closed beta period that interested players can sign up for and receive more information on in the coming months. Player feedback is essential, so fans are encouraged to sign up and offer insight on the game prior to its launch.

was there ever anything filling that niche besides this and, like, tabula rasa?
If you mean MMO shooters, there are a few like the Planetside series, or the sadly defunct Face of Mankind.. it's an under appreciated genre i think, Face of Mankind showed what could be done if done right, and it was quite interesting. Too bad it was in the hands of a very small, unkown studio, with too big a project for them.

They really overstated what effect the game would have on the show and vice-versa. The show was pretty good, good cast. Too bad it was on sci-fi, who tends to cancel actual sci-fi shows.

i always meant to give this a try but i was still really loving the secret world at the time.

i'm kind of surprised to hear the tie-in show was good; the last syfy channel video game production i remember watching was the red faction guerrilla tie in which was.. uh.. well, it was..

Probably because it was the other way around with this one, they had the original series and a tie-in game. Never watched the show but I am always interested in an MMO shooter, hopefully they can do better with this re-release.

the 2013 game was passable for awhile - it had fun & shooting & driving around.
Decent enough for a RPG/ MMO but nothing too spectacular after the TV show tie-in wore off ,...so it will be interesting to see what they can pull off in this new version .

I didn't end up playing much of the original, but I was thoroughly enjoying the show... The game had a lot of tie in to the show, so my interest in this version is much less.

Well, this was unexpected. but welcomed. I loved playing the original. Still do at times. My only concern is, will we get to transfer our current chars and items we paid for.
