Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter One Released

Frontier Developments announces the release of Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter One, the first free update for the third season of Elite Dangerous, the space combat game. This is available now for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, and this trailer offers a look at what to expect. Here are the details:
Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV) today launches Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter One, the first free update of Elite Dangerous’ third season, for PC, the PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system, and the Xbox One all-in-one games and entertainment system.

Beyond will focus on bringing foundational changes to the core systems of Elite Dangerous and include new in-game content for Commanders to experience as they explore the massively multiplayer galaxy.

Beyond - Chapter One introduces challenging Wing Missions, all-new megaship interactions that allow for collection of data and cargo, and a range of major quality of life improvements including changes to the crime and punishment mechanics, visual planetary enhancements, an overhaul of the mission rewards system and the addition of a trade data overlay that will help Commanders find the most profitable trades in the Milky Way.

The Thargoid story continues in Beyond – Chapter One. Following the recent alien attack on humanity’s starports, Chapter One sees the shape of the threat continuing to change as an enemy craft from long ago resurfaces ready to strike any daring pilots that cross its path.

In response to the rising alien threat a new Alliance/Lakon Spaceways ship – the Chieftain – takes to the skies in Chapter One. Designed to favour weapons and manoeuvrability over defence, this combat-oriented craft presents a new challenge for the Thargoids in the hands of capable pilots.

Commanders will also be able to uncover new clues about the mysterious Guardians, offering insight into this long-lost civilisation and their way of life. As Commanders assemble these pieces of information and artefacts they will be able to design and engineer new items and weapons that can deal impressive damage.

I get that they're "brand building" and all of that, but I feel strongly that rendered trailers just take away resources from making the game.
As I understand it, Frontier use their Cobra game engine to create these trailers.
Basically it's a recorded cut scene.

I don't like them myself, because they don't represent the game as it is played. There's way too much emphasis on "pew pew" when that's only a small part of the game. Unless you're one of the three people who play CQC.

If that's true, fair enough. I just don't remember the game having a full character animation framework in it.

There are 10 types of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

Dang, I really wanna play this game more but dang I don't wanna play this game more.

Man.. This comment perfectly encapsulates this game.

The game is gorgeous, full stop. But the game-play loops are so awful. Maybe it comes down to the limitations of their instancing system. Whatever it is, it's really bad.

On the forums they're talking about 3.0 materials collecting. Apparently you go to one planetary base to collect materials and just log out and log in to replenish the supply of rare items. This is so typical of Elite Dangerous "game-play".

Typically pre-rendered cutscenes like this aren't done inhouse, they just farm this stuff out. But if it was there probably wouldn't be much overlap. The bulk of changes with this patch were improving existing systems.

Whether it's done in-house or not is irrelevant. It still costs money.

I tried to get into this game, but it just seemed needlessly complicated, and the things that were complicated didn't really add anything to the game (IMO!).

The amount of stuff that was added with this update is pretty sweet, also seeing stellar bodies rendered in anything but beige is a truly welcome sight.

Their storytelling is virtually non existing, so this trailer is just one way of making up for it I guess.

GalNet Audio and voiced messages (not all mind you) are a nice step in the right direction as well.
