Variety reports that Facebook was exhibiting Epic's VR shooter
Bullet
Train at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Maryland
last week before pulling the demonstration over the backlash it generated
(thanks
Polygon). We were not aware that games are normally demonstrated at
political conferences, but the article refers to CPAC as if it were E3, saying,
"The company and the game’s developer, Epic Games, have showed off the VR
experience at trade shows before." Showing the game in this setting so soon
after the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School raised some
eyebrows, however, and Facebook admits they should have seen this coming. "There
is a standard set of experiences included in the Oculus demos we feature at
public events," said Facebook's Hugo Barra in a statement. "A few of the action
games can include violence. In light of the recent events in Florida and out of
respect for the victims and their families, we have removed them from this demo.
We regret that we failed to do so in the first place."
