I remember shooting homing missiles towards monsters I couldn't even see off the screen as Necro.

What he's saying makes sense. The change in aspect ratio means you can't simply slap new graphics into it. You need to completely, fundamentally rebuild how most of the systems operate, to the point that you're essentially building an entirely different game from the ground up.

It'd be a Diablo 2 clone as much as a Diablo 2 remaster.

Er, no, you can just see more of the world, I don't see how that requires them to fundamentally rebuild any game system. It's just a lame excuse overall.

Did you read the article? Pretty much all the calculations around the random generation and the enemies are done just off the screen, and around where the screen is showing. It's not about what you see, it's about what you don't see.

And this isn't an excuse. Brevik isn't at Blizzard, so he has absolutely no say over whether this gets remade or not. It would be done without his participation, or even knowledge. This is just like Spielberg saying that he feels it would be hard to remake Jaws, because more goes into it than what you see on the screen. It's one guy, who was there, giving his opinion on some technical limitations that they used as advantages, but now that they're no longer in place more thought needs to be given than would be to most remasters.

Yes, I read it, and I think that him calling it a huge technical hurdle is just a huge hyperbole. Sure, they'll have to tweak things, but again, they're not going to have to redesign whole gameplay systems in order to do so.

Move the interface to the sides and keep the 4:3 ratio. Done.

Looking at screenshots, it doesn't look like the interface is taking up enough space to really matter.

Mostly joking, I only played Hellgate:London briefly during a beta or alpha period, although one of my coop buddies did get suckered into buying the lifetime Hellgate pass, or whatever it's called. He's playing The Division with me these days, I should probably get his opinion on the two games, if he can remember enough about Hellgate.

That said, I'm sure Blizzard will do an HD conversion of Diablo 2 eventually, just to make a quick 500 million for themselves.

The Division is an ARPG, so you can compare them, but the Division's systems are extremely simple compared to Hellgate's.

I absolutely love Hellgate. It's by far my favorite Diablo clone ever. I don't understand how someone could hate it. Perhaps it was because it was hyped too much or it was too buggy on launch.

So I never played it 4 months after release because it was a horrible horrible buggy mess. Monsters would get stuck in spots and your weapons wouldn't register hits. I remember the chat interface for online was like an after thought and the online portion was completely unplayable due to horrible servers.

How long did you play it for?

I played every iteration over a period of years. I couldn't really tell you how much time I put in, but it's a lot. I never had the weapons not registering hits problem, but the game sure had a lot of bugs. That wasn't a problem for me though, just like Skyrim's infinite bugs aren't a problem for most people. You could say that Skyrim is an open world, so it justifies the bugs, but I think that Hellgate also justified them. It had full multiplayer, very complex loot and skill systems, rooms filled with more monsters than probably any fps ever and had all that run at acceptable performances.

There's just never been another FPS ARPG with this level of complexity and I doubt it'll ever happen again.

I played the crap out of Hellgate when it came out. Though I don't think I ever finished it because I kept trying out new classes, and if I recall the farthest I ever got was limited by a nasty main quest bug. I still have the disc around somewhere, but I'd be concerned that trying to play it today in offline mode (if that's even possible, I forget) would be a bad idea since there'd be no way to get whatever patches they came out with.

Apparently the F2P reboot that came out of Korea a few years back bit the dust, too, but a fan revival project for the original looks to be coming along. You can sign up for the alpha version here: https://london2038.com

As soon as I saw that title I was like "look, it is David Brevik".

He has basically made a few really sub-par games since parting with Blizzard. His only real non-Diablo credit was a minor footnote on WarCraft III. His own ideas for Diablo as a turnbased RPG were canned. It wouldn't even be the Diablo that his fans know. Since then his biggest game was what? The sad and buggy Hellgate?

I wish him the best in the future and I have no doubt that, even if he needed a little co-developer feedback, he made a lot of the Diablo magic. Now though? He just gets lost in tales of his past glory and how he could do it so much better now (though he never does).

At any rate Diablo 2 works just fine on modern PCs. People are playing it right now. Mods have been made for the AR and res. If the black bars on the screen bother him so much he should look into this dark wizardry of old called a CRT.
