Morality Group Targets Steam

Rolling Stone reports on a letter sent this summer to Valve Corporation complaining that a couple of the games for sale on Steam violated the service's own policies against "pornography" and "patently offensive content." This was sent by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, an outfit formed in 1962 under the name Morality in the Media. The games in question are House Party and Porno Studio Tycoon (it would be a disservice to Barbra Streisand to not include the purchase links). They say these violate Steam guidelines, and note that they are easily accessible by anyone of any age due to the lax age gate that guards them. According to Rolling Stone, these transgressions land Valve on the NCOSE's "dirty dozen" list of top offenders, a group of perverts that includes Amazon, Backpage.com, Comcast. Ebsco, HBO, iBooks, "the poster boys of #metoo," Roku, Snapchat, Twitter, Youtube, and Steam. Thanks Devicer.

Though it would probably behove Steam to call out when games have nudity.

Nudity, Mature, Adult, Sexual Content....these are all current tags for game descriptions on Steam that are currently used. Do you mean something on top of that or am I misunderstanding?

More blatant. I'm not looking for those tags, but I've never seen them.

Then again, I don't read steam pages. I find discovery impossible there, so I figure out what I want then find it on steam.

Fact is the feature you want already exists and if you used steam store pages for even 2 minutes you'd know they are not only there, but a great tool for discovery, especially niche user tags

Other than making the font bigger they can't really be more blatant as they are listed right under the game title/brief description at the top of the item page. I see your point though, you can totally scan the whole page and completely miss them if you aren't specifically looking for them.

That said, I find the whole thing ridiculous anyway. As long as these morality police groups continue to claim sex is in someway a bad thing I will never understand how anyone with half a brain can take them seriously. The thought process that these groups exercise is borderline fascist in the way that they wish to control what people see based exclusively on their own beliefs concerning what is appropriate and for whom.

So, the Internet then?

And no one pays attention.

Though it would probably behove Steam to call out when games have nudity. Lord knows how much more HBO I watched as a kid when they decided to put the warnings before movies. "I won't watch this... wait, Nudity? I'm in!" Inevitably it was Bill Murray's ass, but that disclaimer was enough to get me to tune in. Good marketing then, good marketing to a new generation of teens today! But probably less good, given the internet.

Oh noes! College kids having sex at a party? Outrageous! Being able to manage a porn studio that shows literally no sex and is indistinguishable from a million other tycoon games? Horrendous! Thousands of games depicting horrific violence, torture, graphic gore and the like? Who cares. We've got to save the children from sex!

Ya gotta love these habitually offended attention seeker groups.

All groups like this do is try to get noticed as they indirectly harangue famous people or organizations... Sadly it often works. GG.

You only have so much free time in life, it's probably not the best thing to do to waste it on stuff like this, either as NCOSE or caring about an organization I'd never even heard of before today.

But seriously, porn studio tycoon? Rofl! I guess they ran out of trains and theme parks and whatnot.

I will never understand people like this. They just have way too much time and money on their hands. Go out and end poverty or something actually worthwhile you assholes.
