Happy 22nd birthday to Duke Nukem 3D, 3D Realms' fantastic 2.5D shooter which
was released on this day in 1996. My strongest memory of Duke3D was playing
it on DWANGO, the seminal multiplayer gaming service. DWANGO was pretty set in
its ways, and not only was it a stretch to get anyone to play anything other
than DOOM, it was a stretch to get anyone to play it on any map other than
DWANGO5, Map 01. But the Duke
demo took the service by storm, and playing multiplayer Dukematch with all the
game's tricky gadgets was a blast. If you are interested in re-exploring the
