Star Citizen Website Relaunches, Offers New Trailer

The Roberts Space Industries Website has relaunched, offering an enhanced homebase for Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium's upcoming crowdfunded space game. They explain the goal of the renovation is to provide visitors "a more intuitive experience and stronger branding for all three pillars of the game’s development." The latest post offers a new trailer from Squadron 42 called "Welcome to the Coil." Here's a bit on what that means: "This week, we present our latest Squadron 42 feature. Take an in-depth look at the foreboding, mysterious Coil, and the design challenges our devs had to overcome while bringing this distinctive setting to life in the game."

Remember when we all thought we were just going to get a new Wing Commander Privateer game and how cautiously optimistic everyone felt?

If that idea would have been a night of passion that resulted in pregnancy it would have started elementary school by now.

WTF does the "Mysterious Coil" have to do with creating and releasing the game they promised several years ago now?

"Look at this new pointless shiny thing we are wasting our time making while not fulfilling any of our original promises.. aren't we AWESOME!"

Dev describing the coil with a confused, bewildered look... "It's a technical nightmare".

I love everything about this game. I don't think we will ever again have an example of game design hubris at this level. The drama and comedy writes itself at this point.

Maze / Labyrinth in space. Basically going to dungeon crawl with a spaceship. Got it.

Not sure we needed a 30 minute video to get the concept.

35 minutes of almost zero footage of the game.

This bodes well.

Also I got the Squadron 42 email last night and was like "oh did they make some progress?"

No. No they didn't. But you can buy a tshirt!

I didn't sit through it.

I'm imagining it's a procedurally generated "dungeon" for SQ42?

That might be kind of cool to give it some additional longevity if it ever launches and is actually the kind of game you *want* to keep playing.

At least the maze is game content. Updating the website has nothing to do with building the game. It's a complete waste of resources.

Uh no. In fact a great many of us from day one flat out said it was a scam or doomed to fail. And that's because we knew what most others didn't and that was that WC/Priv got made in spite of CR, not because of him. That he was yanked off those projects because he was a clown incapanle of delivering what he promised either on time or on budget. SC is just one more perfect example of the ancient adage, 'Fools and their money are soon parted.'

They could sell JPGs of screenshots of the new website or even better the website how it could look like after the next overhaul next year.

At least they are not trying to sell you a JPG of a t-shirt that will still be in the works for a decade - before getting scrapped.

I never get the hate over this title. What they're trying to achieve and what they have achieved is such a feat of computer engineering that it's frankly mind blowing from a technical perspective.

If they put Star Citizen out half baked, it'll tank and everyone can say I told you so, but then what? It'll pretty much be the end of any hope of an esoteric or original idea getting triple A funding independent of a major publishing house.

If however they take their time (as such an undertaking demands), there's a strong chance they'll create GTA in space (albeit without the hookers probably...maybe a stretch goal), and it will be beneficial for the entire industry especially those who have a great idea but just can't get it funded because it's missing the obligatory lootboxes, world-war-2-in-space, gender fluid characters or whatever else the cookie-cutter publishing trapper-keeper's demand.

Frankly, even if you hate Star Citizen and/or Chris Roberts - if they succeed it'll be good for the indie gaming industry as a whole and that can't be a bad thing...

Except Chris didn't pitch that. He pitched a new Wing Commander game. In the early days, no one signed up for "a feat of computer engineering" with a 6+ year mission. Furthermore, Chris is notorious for making a ton of promises via the many stretch goals and then deciding not to deliver (e.g., "100 systems at launch").

That's the source of the "hate."

Reference: Chris Roberts: "As is true with most projects when the scope changes so do the timelines, you can’t build a castle in the same time you would a woodshed no matter how much money or how many people you have. To try to make some kind of narrative about how we promised the game in two years no matter how big the scope grew is false. Could we have shipped a small scale 30 mission game in the old Wing Commander format in two years? Yes, but that’s not the game the community wants or the game we’re building."
