John Cena to Star in Duke Nukem Movie? [Jan 23, 2018, 10:56 am ET] – Share – Viewing Comments

Hollywood Reporter reports that wrassler
John Cena is being considered for
the lead in a Duke Nukem movie. This seems like a reasonable choice for Duke,
presuming Guy Fieri was unwilling to get into shape for the role. Most of Duke's
lines in games are from other movies, so it will be interesting to see how a
script for such a project would turn out. Here's word on where this project
stands, none of which sounds like a done deal:
The wrestler-turned-actor is negotiations to star in Duke Nukem, a big-screen adaptation of the popular video game franchise featuring the politically incorrect action hero that is set up at Paramount.
Platinum Dunes, the company run by Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, will produce the movie.
No director is on board at this stage. A search for a writer will begin soon to develop a script for what is intended to be a starring vehicle for Cena.
The Nukem video games follow muscular adventures of its titular protagonist, who initially was a mash-up of action-hero tropes. The muscular cigar-chomping figure has been fighting aliens in order to save planet Earth since 1991, when the first game was released.
The project was previously set up at Dimension Films, although the rights lapsed. Paramount picked up the movie rights from Gearbox Software, the company behind the game.
I suspect Paramount just picked up the rights because they were cheap. They'll juggle about for a bit without actually deciding on a project and the rights will lapse again. Gearbox gets some easy money.
Although I'd like to see the guy that did Manborg (and later The Void) take a swing at making the movie, it would benefit from that quirky low-tech 90's videogame / DTV movie look far more than a generic SFX type movie.

That was my first thought too. But then someone else mentioned the Ash/Evil Dead series, and it occurred to me that if those movies hold up in the campy comedic style in the way that they do today, couldn't a well-done Duke Nukem cheese-fest work just as well? I'm going to wait and see.

Guy looks like he fits the shoe. A few years ago the perfect fit would have been either Dolph Lundgren or one of the German bodybuilders like Ralf Moeller or Dennis Wolf. Well, or just fucking Arnie with his hair dyed blonde!
I could see it working if they treated it like the Ash vs. The Evil Dead series. Make it a dark-comedy, rated-R, action movie but with aliens.

Even though I believe a Duke Nukem movie would probably be terrible, John Cena is perfect casting.
He has really good comedic timing to go along with the physicality.
The "right level" of over the top for Duke is so subjective, though. This movie could be bad, bad, bad unless they get everything calibrated and consistent and just so.
Maybe get Guillermo del Toro to direct.
Or Tim Miller, who directed Deadpool.

It's a question worth asking. Duke Nukem was a parody of '80s action films, which have long fallen off the radar.
Still might work as a big dumb action film, if it's got a good script.
