Petroglyph Sought Star Wars: Empire At War Sequel

During a AMA session on reddit yesterday to discuss Forged Battalion's early access launch, developer Petroglyph Games reveals they approached EA a couple of times expressing a desire to create a sequel to Star Wars: Empire At War, their 2006 Star Wars RTS game (thanks GameWatcher). "We would LOVE to work on Empire at War again - we've been tossing around ideas ever since the new movies came out," explains Petroglyph's Torpid. "However, the decision is entirely up to Disney (the IP holder) and Electronic Arts (the exclusive video game license holder)." Here's a response from Petroglyph's Ted to the question about possibly revisiting Empire at War with an official expansion:
Unfortunately, no official expansion is in the works - although we are still collecting data and hoping to get another patch out based on feedback.

This is something that is purely corporate. I don't have details, but EA has the license to do all Star Wars games and they seem focused on making a few titles at a very high quality bar. So, they are using all their available resources to that end, which means that if you're not into FPS, it's not currently a priority.

We have reached out to them a few times to see if they would be interested in contracting us to build an Empire at War II at the same quality level as their other Star Wars FPS titles, but nothing has resulted from that (yet).

I felt that Red Alert 3 and RA3 Uprising were superior games.

It was alright when I played it, which wasn't for very long. I didn't like the ground battle stuff either, as some of you are mentioning, which for me was a main reason why I didn't continue playing it even though the space battle stuff was fun. After that I went back to the old Rebellion game, which I still play occasionally to this day.

In any case, it's a shame more types of Star Wars are just not made anymore with interesting takes or risks like Empire at War. So far there have been the two Battlefronts by EA and some mobile stuff. I feel all the innovation and risk-taking with the Star Wars IP is largely gone for video game media.

They should have petitioned Disney to do it on mobile because Disney holds the rights to make mobile Star Wars games, not EA.

I quite liked the original game but it was definitely lacking in some areas, especially AI (as usual for just about every strategy game) and the overall complexity. It would have been cool if the star map would have had more strategic depth. It was all a little too easy, too plain, too bland, too straightforward to lead your fleet to victory.

Except the SW: EAW game sucked. It sold Ok, and has continued to be sold on Steam at dirt-cheap, but it's basically just a crappy game capitalizing on the SW license.

Well, duh. It's Disney. Don't let that name make you think they're this benevolent, friendly corporation. They're 10000000000000000% about money money money money money money money money money money.

But with Marvel they have proven that they can go for quality AND cash. There was hope for Star Wars but except for Rogue One I don't like any of their movies or games (EA and mobile).

BWAHAHAHAHA - WHAT? EA should greenlight a single-player game with a real story as a background? No Pay2Win DLCs, no complete control of the contents/the game via EA only servers? Hi-la-ri-ous!

It is time for EA to burn and crash. This is THE ONLY WAY we will ever get to play another REAL single-player story game. Let CD Project work on a great Witcher like RPG, let Larian work on an RPG like Divinity: Original Sin, let id Software/Bethesda work on a shooter like Doom or an RPG like Skyrim, let Petroglyph work on another RTS, let Obisidan work on a game like Fallout: New Vegas... So many possibilities, but Sith Lord Diznee chose... EA. Most hated company for how many years? So we can assume that the Mousepire went for the biggest check and not for the best games - makes sense if you are only in it for the money, makes absolutely no sense if you are a fan of a franchise as many over at LucasDisney have so often claimed to be.

Wow you can't just blurt out controversial opinions like that without a trigger warning dude.
Sorry. Don't worry though - soon a debate will arise about whether EA sucked more under Obama or Trump, and maybe W and Slick Willy will get thrown in there. Then some foreigner will make some comment about how dumb Americans are and how insert country name here is way better, and at some point Hitler and Fascism will ne referenced. Racism accusations will be tossed around briefly, perhaps with a dash of misogyny, then we'll settle into your bog standard tinfoil hat-wearing right wing wackos versus egg-sucking, commie liberals discussion every thread devolves into, and all will be forgotten.

Loved the first game, but yea EA has no intention of doing another one. And even if it did, they would try and put some stupid ass loot crate in so you could buy the heroes.

As counter-intuitive as it sounds, Petroglyph just needs to stand back and wait patiently if they want a SW game. Let EA screw up a few more times and get Disney to drop the exclusivity. A new game with rights "loaned" from EA will have more strings attached than Pinocchio, and might not even be worth the trouble. Wait, let EA lose the license, then make the good game that you want to make...
