Elite Dangerous: Beyond Chapter One Beta This Month

Frontier Developments takes to Steam to announce details for Elite Dangerous: Beyond, season three for the space combat game (thanks K). They say chapter one of the season will begin beta testing on January 25th, confusingly saying this is both "open to everyone on PC and Mac" but also calling it "the open beta coming to all PC Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous: Horizons players." Word is: "The beta includes new content, changes and improvements for both Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Horizons players. In order to access all of the content, you will require Elite Dangerous Horizons." Here's more on what this will add:
New Ship: Chieftain
Elite Dangerous Horizons Commanders will also be able to take to the stars in the new Alliance Chieftain, designed not only to dish out punishment, but to avoid it. Manufactured by Lakon Spaceways, the Chieftain is more maneuverable than ships of similar size and weight, and its combat profile means it can more than hold its own in a fight.

Improved Core Mechanics
Chapter 1 of Beyond will bring improvements to some of Elite Dangerous' core mechanics, including accessibility enhancements to the engineering mechanics, an overhaul of mission rewards and big changes to crime and punishment. We’ll be sharing more information on the changes to Crime and Punishment, and the Engineers in a future post here on the forums and in the livestreams mentioned above.

Wing Missions
Chapter 1 of Beyond will give you the chance to take on wing missions with your fellow Commanders, sharing both the efforts and rewards.

Revised Trade Data
Commanders will now be able to access trade data from systems they have previously visited, in order to make more informed decisions when shipping goods across the Milky Way.

Planetary Visual Improvements
Chapter 1 also includes the first of the planetary visual improvements coming as part of the Beyond series of updates (with more surface level improvements coming later in the year) bringing a new vibrancy to the Elite Dangerous galaxy.

GalNet Audio
With the introduction of GalNet Audio, you will be able to catch up on the latest news from across the galaxy without ever leaving the action.

This is the craziest VR game you'll ever play. It definitely makes me feel like I'm flying an awesome spaceship and dog fighting in VR is amazing.

Why would being in a wing be any different than just flying around a station or something, in terms of FPS? Doesn't seem like it's having to render any more really. I could see it having an impact on the CPU maybe.

I can land close to where I want to be? It always has to be the fucking sun? I can travel in multiples of C but somehow the technology to master this doesn't exist? Or I have to waste a ton of time just getting around a single system to go through yet more wasted time with all the requesting permission to dock, than the actual docking, than the player services, etc. etc. etc. I shouldn't have to rely on an external website to see trade date. I shouldn't have to go to each station physically to see what missions are there. And that's just the tip iceberg of all the things wrong with this game. Have you ever played any of the X games? That's how you do space games.

I played a lot of the X games.

A lot of the things you're bitching about are in all the X games. There are some workarounds that X has managed but I find them buggy and not working very well. Some of the trade data stuff is about the only uniquely legitimate complaints that you're spewing.

then use the money to outfit a vulture and have fun killing things.

Cool, I'll give that a try once I get my controller situation worked out. Thanks!

Has this game been flushed out? The beta was good but after a 20-30 hours you pretty much saw or did all that there was to be done. Still p2p instances for everything?

I just started it - without the season pass - and I'd say no in that case. Everything is still just combat/piracy, courier, or mine/trade. There's not even a lot to see. And of course it takes forever to get anywhere. Still can't see trade data for the stations in the same fucking system. In short it's all just grind as far as I can see. Take a look at what Egosoft is doing with X4 - due out this year - instead.

What else is there? FPS combat?

What are you expecting to see except for ships, space stations and planets?

Are you advocating fast travel?

There are online utilities for this, but I hear you.

The Horizons DLC will address some of your issues with "there's nothing to see", but it sounds like you've already moved on. That's fine, but I don't think your criticisms are fair or even good critiques. I could come up with a laundry list of crap that I'd like addressed, but none of it maps to what you are saying.

I dont know what you mean by unoptimized as it runs very well on my rig in VR, got 90+fps and i can even get some much needed oversampling.
And yeah it's the VR killer app. Dogfights around asteroids are just epic (and if you're in one of those small snub fighters, it's quite brutal). The beauty around you never ceases to amaze, you're in space FFS !
If it wasnt for VR i'd have quit ages ago, the game is still shallow and the only well flushed out career is bounty hunting (combat is awesome, have to give that). Trading is completely meaningless, mining is horribly shallow and boring (and just as meaningless), exploring is watching a screen loader repeat thousands times over again... But man, that combat. Too bad it's still limited by p2p instances and still no ingame player guilds.

Yeah I'm genuinely kind of amazed. They must be making decent money on the skins & aesthetics.

And I'm sure the line 4 lifers from Kickstarter are grumpy.
AFAIK, the only ones who have a reason to be slightly grumpy are the lifetime expansion pass buyers because their "lifetime" ended with Horizons if I understood things correctly. Those peeps might have to pay for future content (like everyone else).
But Frontier haven't really revealed their business model going forward so we'll have to see about all that.

That's what I meant I couldn't remember what they were called. I backed a kickstarter board game that offered "line for life" which promised every expansion in the game, then they went out of business one or two expansions later.

Anyway, I'm not complaining, I love ED. I built my new computer room specifically so I could get back to playing ED when I moved. I bought insanely expensive HOTAS sticks to play it more impressively. It's really the only game I want to get VR for.

I just picked this up during the Holiday sale, along with Horizons. I got an Oculus Rift for xmas, and bought a Saitek X52 Pro stick/throttle. I'm now trying to figure out how to set up the stick and bindings, and whether I can turn off those LEDs when I'm not using it. Hopefully I'll be able to get all that figured out this weekend.

Anyone know of any good info on how to start out in this game at this point? Most of the stuff I've seen online has been over a year old. Not sure what's still relevant and good advice at this point.

I bought the game during the alpha when it was $75. As far as I'm concerned, the Kickstarter promises did not apply to me nor did it apply to the 95% of people complaining about them being broken. I knew this was a game would be evolving over many years, but FDEV needed a business model to do that. I'm fine with that pivot.

The game definitely feels empty when you start because so much content reveals itself as you progress- you can't just jump into fighting Thargoids and expect to enjoy it. I've got a maxed out Anaconda plus several hundred million in the bank and feel like I have not scratched the surface with what I can be doing.

What's a "line 4 lifer from Kickstarter"? I backed the game at founder level (£150) and I'm perfectly fine with what I got.
They delivered the game almost on time (at least in the same year as promised), broke only one major promise (full offline play but WGAF) and gave us more than three years of free updates. Plus being a founder still has its perks like access to Jameson Memorial from the start without being required to have an Elite rank.
I have actually bought skins for my ships just to support Frontier because I felt kind of bad about getting so much out of the game for "free".

I give them props for having one of the few good space games out there and continually updating it. unlike some games...looking at you SC

I've played off and on since beta. I'll ahve to put this on my list of games to revisit, after Fallout 4, but before Conan Exiles and Ark

Peace
