Subnautica This Month

Unknown Worlds announces January 23rd will be the release date for Subnautica, their underwater action game. This game has traveled at least 20,000 leagues under the sea since its "earliest access" launch in October of 2014 and its Early Access launch two months later. They are celebrating the event with a Subnautica Launch Livestream from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. This game follows the scenario of a lot of sci-fi survival games, except you crash land on the ocean floor, rather than an alien planet. Here's a bit:
Dive Into a Vast Underwater World
You have crash-landed on alien ocean world, and the only way to go is down. Subnautica's oceans range from sun drenched shallow coral reefs to treacherous deep-sea trenches, lava fields, and bio-luminescent underwater rivers. Manage your oxygen supply as you explore kelp forests, plateaus, reefs, and winding cave systems. The water teems with life: Some of it helpful, much of it harmful.

Scavenge, Craft, and Survive
After crash landing in your Life Pod, the clock is ticking to find water, food, and to develop the equipment you need to explore. Collect resources from the ocean around you. Craft knives, lights, diving gear, and personal water craft. Venture deeper and further form to find rarer resources, allowing you to craft more advanced items.

Construct Underwater Habitats
Build bases on the sea floor. Choose layouts and components, and manage hull-integrity as depth and pressure increase. Use your base to store resources, park vehicles, and replenish oxygen supplies as you explore the vast ocean.

YES! Fucking finally!

Early last year I enjoyed the hell out of this EA/EACC whatever. I hope I haven't bled it dry already. What I also hope:

1) Full story;
2) Better visuals inside the crashed ship;
3) Some more deep-deep areas.

I haven't explored everything so hope #3 might be moot.

Other than the above, not much hoping to see improved from the early 2016 state. Can't wait!

Wow, they must be serious since they announced dates or months or a area of time for release about 3 times last year.

Good game overall when I played it last year despite some dumb changes they made mid year to the sub. They reversed those though.

On 7 Days. The reason I want it live, so there isn't anymore forces server resets. Mods that don't immediately break, since they will hold Mod compatibility on release. Sure there is fun and lots of it, but it just needs to go final now.

After playing this quite a bit a couple years ago, I promised myself not to get into it again until it was finished, so I could experience it fresh again. It's such a good game, and by the creators of Natural Selection/2, if anyone here has played or still plays that (I still get a round or two in weekly). I've only played the start of Subnautica since my first playthrough, on hardcore (permadeath) mode to test that portion of the game, as it is all I will probably play after going through the whole thing once, and not many people were playing/testing that mode.

Excellent news that this is having a full release soon! It's such an atmospheric and immersive game. One of my favorite experiences in gaming over the past 2 years.

Well, thanks for EAing that up! Also, I fully agree, fuck EA, and EA from EA, but not all EA. Some EA are pretty good. But not EA of course, or EA from EA.

I think there are already plans for an expansion pack that adds an arctic area.

I immediately took to Steam to make sure - it seemed very strange to me that EA would support such games, and that they would be good if they belong to EA. It took me a moment or two... Early Access.

I think it's best to try and find a different abbreviation to this phrase. Saying that both those games are "EA" nearly gave me a heart attack. I don't know the other game mentioned, but Subnautica looks to be REAL good. I watched Markiplier play it, there really seems to be a lot of thought and care put into this game (so, big shame if EA ruins it ).

Afaik they abandoned all plans for coop very early in the dev process.

Question: will this go up in price when it leaves EA or will it remain the same?

I don't really like survival games, but I absolutely loved this. I played it in Fall of 2015 when it was still early in early access, but it still ended up being one of my favorite games that year.

I've been sitting on it, waiting for the full retail release to play it again.

Me too. It's been difficult staying away but I really want to experience it fully complete. Same with Ghost of a Tale. These are two EA games I'm actually glad to support.

I can highly recommend 7 days to die.

When it is finally released.

Nah, I recommend it now. I would have recommended it 2 years ago also. The game has enough content to last you for hundreds of hours. The fact that it's still in EA and that they consistently release huge patches that basically warrant a full replay is a bonus.

Edit: But yeah, it shouldn't be in EA anymore.

Agreed, 7DTD is a great game that keeps getting better, with high replayability. I've been playing it since Alpha-5 with over 1,100 of my life lost in this game. However, it has become more grindy with each Alpha release/update via gated perks, skills, items, etc. The game comes with a random generated map option, so each playthrough the map is completely different/fresh.

The developers are very active with community, are continually releasing updates and improvements, and now they are working on updating to A17 release. It is one of the most, if not THEE, most interactive game out there.
