PUBG Passes 3M CCUs

The remarkable success story of PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS continues to add new chapters (thanks DSOGaming). The Steam Game and Player Statistics page now shows the battle royale shooter has annihilated its own record for concurrent users on Steam. About a month ago the game had just shy of 2.8 million users playing at once, and now the record stands at 3,106,358. Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

Not as long as independents like Wube Software come around and make great games like Factorio.

What really sucks is now every game here on out will have to be battle royale.

Not a fan.

Well that's already been the trend. Now Activation, EA and UBI need to have theirs and then that's that. There are plenty of games of all kinds being made, no reason to dramatize it any different. Yes many companies will go where they think the big money is. Blizzard imo is the only one I'd guarantee a success, 'cause they following they have.

We need a WW2 DayZ Zombie Survival Battle Royale game now.

Well, there is (was?) a server setting for zombies in PUBG. It basically makes 4-5 people a team, and the entire rest of the server are a zombie horde. It was pretty fun from the couple times I played it.

I don't think 'every' game will be a battle royal, but PUBG has highlighted the fact that there is a market for it. Even without the farming and cheating accounts from China, the numbers are still impressive for a game that has as many problems as it does in its current state.

In the next two years, some other dev will make a better version and PUBG will end up a victim of its own success in the long run.

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishfull thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

How many of these players would immediately disappear if they couldn’t sell items outside of their country?

I’m quite sure the game isn’t $30 in China. So farmers buy cheap accounts, selling loot to Americans. As long as they get more for that sold loot than the account cost them, they don’t care if it gets banned. If they couldn’t sell outside of China, would the cheating drop? Playercount most certainly would. How much of Bluehole’s income is from transaction fees on those item sales?

It’s a system that benefits the developer, and as long as they keep saying “look at all the bans!”, players will believe that the company takes the cheating seriously. But from all accounts, it seems the cheating benefits the developer...why would they take a HARD look at how to stop it?

This is not unique to PUBG, which is why CS:GO is almost always in the top seller list.

None of that matters, the stat is an enormous feather in their cap that proves they're obliterating everything else on PC. At this point they're close to beating Call of Duty console versions during launch week records... Crazy.

They're beating everything on *Steam*. League of Legends for example, has over 7 million concurrent users.

LoL is free to play and has spent 8+ years building up that playerbase... PUBG charges $30 up front and has only been around 9 months. I am far more impressed by the latter. Of course, it remains to be seen whether they can maintain even a fraction of this momentum, but who knows where PUBG will be years from now.

Flip that around and examine LoL during its first year, you'll notice they weren't even newsworthy. Like I literally can't seem to find articles about it from back then. The oldest one I saw is from 2011, when they were boasting 15 million total accounts (registered for free) and a peak concurrency of 500k players after two years of operation. There's no denying they've grown a lot in recent years, but where LoL has the slow-burning inertia of thermite, PUBG is a nuclear explosion.

yep, and 1/2 were hackers/ cheats -- so how many of the rest were double/ triple accounts from the previous bans..??

Concurrent... that's at the same time. If they were double and triple accounts from bans, that wouldn't be concurrent since the other accounts would be banned.
