Out of the Blue

Happy winter to the northern hemisphere, as the solstice arrives today at 11:28 am EST. This involves a short day's journey into night, as we're due for around nine hours of daylight today, but thankfully we'll start getting more and more daylight every day beginning tomorrow. And happy summer to those in the southern hemisphere, I'll try not to feel jealous as I work through the last stages of my cold and try to figure out how to get the salt off my car.

Salty Links: Thanks Ant.

F.E.A.R spent way to much time in office cubicles, but it did have the best enemy A.I. of any game I've ever played to this day.
It was an illusion though:
"F.E.A.R. was widely lauded for the ability of its soldiers (both singly and in squads) to flank the player. In reality, the AI wasn't flanking at all -- it was moving from one cover area to another cover area. Because of the skill exhibited by the level designers, that next cover area was to the side of the player's location (or where the designers assumed the player would be), so when the AI moved to that location, it created a seamless illusion of the enemy flanking you."

And it worked. I played the game not too long ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Good AI is usually going to be fudges like this. Anything else takes too long to program and eats too many CPU cycles. A decade from now? Maybe not. But 12 years ago absolutely.

I remember the AI doing cool things like flipping tables, etc. The biggest issue I had with it all was that the bullet time would make things like that moot. They built some cool AI routines, then let you slow them down so much that the AI would be dead before it could do anything. My first playthrough I actually didn't use the bullet time at all, and the game was more fun for it.

I understand what you're saying. I guess a better analogy would be like going to a magic show when you know how all the tricks are performed ... it ruins the illusion of the 'magic'.
