Destiny 2 is Activision's "Biggest PC Launch"

Activision Publishing announces that Destiny 2 is the biggest PC game launch in the company's history. Here's word, where they do not offer any hard numbers:

Based on units, Destiny 2 has outsold Destiny, hailed as the “biggest new video game IP launch in history” at the time. The highly-acclaimed sequel is the first Activision title launched on Battle.net, and is the biggest PC launch in Activision Publishing history. The game has earned more than 90 awards and nominations to date. Activision and Bungie also released the Destiny 2 Ghost Skill for Amazon Alexa, a first of its kind for games, allowing players to ask Alexa and Ghost to perform in-game tasks.

Comparing this year to '87, I'd say the winner is '87. I'd take Reagan over Trump any day, and there are many more memorable movies on that list than anything that's come out this year. The series on Netflix and HBO are better than most of the stuff that is coming out in movie theatres nowadays.

How can you even DARE begin talking about 1987 music without mentioning Guns'n'fucking'Roses Appetite for Destruction?

Your 80s credits are hereby revoked and TRASHED. Seriously.

Not gonna lie, the summer of '87 was pretty fucking awesome.

Top Summer '87 Movies:
RoboCop
Predator
Lost Boys (shit, Creston may be on to something already)
Spaceballs
Monster Squad
Harry and the Hendersons
Jaws: The Revenge
Superman IV
Garbage Pail Kids

Top Songs of Summer 87:
Here I Go Again on my Own, and a whole bunch of stuff from kinda good to crap. Movies 1, Songs 0
Actual list is
1. "Alone" - Heart
2. "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)" - Whitney Houston
3. "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" - U2
4. "Shakedown" - Bob Seger
5. "La Bamba" - Los Lobos
6. "I Want Your Sex" - George Michael
7. "Who's That Girl" - Madonna
8. "Only In My Dreams" - Debbie Gibson
9. "Heart And Soul" - T'Pau
10. "Luka" - Suzanne Vega

Given those movies, though, I'll say it was pretty fucking awesome. Robocop and Predator in theaters at the same time, with The Lost Boys and Monster Squad? And Spaceballs?!

I don't get all the hate.

Then you should go pick up some retro copies of quake 1/2/3 and download user made mods, maps and levels. The thing with new AAA games is they remove control from the player and make you pay for what used to be free and everyone shared. The level of fuck you in modern AAA games is off the charts. You really don't understand how badly PC games have been fucked over with this new generation of kiddies who never gamed on PC during the 90's.

If you really want to understand the rage, go pickup old PC games made during the 90's, their level editors and maps/mods. You'll start to understand why there is such rage at modern gaming.

If you hate modern gaming, why are you still here?

You can either accept that things have changed and enjoy what exists, while voicing your opinion to revert some things back, or you can keep hanging around a website dedicated to modern gaming news and constantly talk about how everything sucks and everything was better when you were a teenager discovering things for the first time.

I'll bet the music was better back then, too. Same with action movies, and anything else you loved at the time.
Everything was better back in the old days.
Fast food was better. burger king had a mini steak dinner that was like filet steak to a pre-teen. the first sips of beer i tried from my dads pilsner glass have never been bested.

But if you asked my dad about the good old days he would call bullshit. namely going to the outhouse in a snowstorm. party line telephone service. not everyone had electricity. the practice of medicine was medieval

So there must be a sweet-spot where everything converged and the whole world was perfect and everybody lived in peace and harmony and gaming was the best. Oh yeah, and the music rocked.

I don't get all the hate. I have multiple high-level characters and I have never spent a dime on a loot box. There is no need. Maybe, in a round about way you could spend money to get blue mods to then create purple ones? Or, a purple one might drop? They can all be had by just playing the game.

Other than that (which is is no way necessary or even smart) the eververse stuff is all ships, shaders, and other stuff that provides no benefit in game as far as I can tell.

I've got all the weapons that are BIS for the raids, all the armor, and all of the mods I want and have never even thought about buying anything.

SWBFII was completely different. The boxes had the chance to give you significant upgrades to your build.

Maybe I'm missing something, but your post is fairly scathing of a mechanic that I have never experienced.

Well, Destiny/Destiny 2 are kind of designed for collecting. They've made some bad decision points- the shaders are charges now, and you use them up per piece of armor/weapon, and that royally sucks. So the bright engrams are important for the high end "collecting" stuff. Which kind of sucks because it's no longer tied to activity in game as much as it is either loot box or pay for loot boxes.

But I agree. I haven't felt the need to buy anything in Destiny 2 aside from content (I got the season pass version of the game for dirt cheap over black friday)

Edit: What I would love is Borderlands' loot system inside Destiny. The eleventy gajillion guns/armor combos would make me pretty happy.

The heady days of highly moddable FPS games ended almost 15 years ago. AAA games are always closely linked with commercialism, and always have been. But then again a lot of the indie games I've played lately haven't exactly been encouraging to mod communities either.

I think a large portion of that is just gone. We've moved on from mods to whole dev kits where you can build your game from the ground up instead of skinning over a machine gun to look like a pulse rifle. I can install the Unreal engine and just go. If I create my own assets I have access to the engine. Same for Unity, Lumberyard, etc...

Honestly, a mod system for Destiny or Call of Duty probably wouldn't see a huge scene. There are frankly better tools now and the opportunity for the most passionate of what would have been the mod community in decades past to get compensated for their work.

The only thing I miss is the ability to build and add maps to a game. That hasn't moved on. Some of the all-time classics that we still play variants of today started as community maps in Quake or Doom and some of the best mappers in the industry started by making community maps.

Seriously, dont comment about something you really have no idea about.
Yep, I did encounter them...so I do know what you're talking about. I felt like my entire strategy was: 1) If no shield then shoot at head or 2) If shield then switch weapon, break shield, switch weapon, shoot at head. I had to use more strategy playing the first level of the original Halo, a game that is sixteen years old, than I did playing the beginning of Destiny 2. Undoubtedly more strategy is required for the bosses, but from my experience the beginning of the game is lame.

It probably didn't help that I had little attachment to the characters, the city, and the overall story (although I heard the story from Destiny was shit anyway). Also, the silent protagonist was a huge turn off. Here my character was, his city being destroyed, his companions being attacked/possibly killed, and when face to face with the enemy leader, all he could do was shrug...

I understand at launch there was about 90 hours of gameplay. Even for a casual player that's only going to last a month or two. A dedicated player could burn through it in a week.

There seems to be a reasonable population on servers. I always see people running around and frequently you can get anywhere from 3 to half a dozen people running public events.

The pseudo-mmo format makes it kind of hard to nail down server populations.

Like the lack of sales numbers, how many are actual awards and how many are nominations? And why? I don't see anything award worth here. An on rails grindy shooter. Big whoop. Like many others I though the demo was completely meh bleh. I may pick this up when it hits 5 bucks and I'm bored with nothing else to play but that's about the extent of it.

I played the Destiny 2 demo and I was left very unimpressed. Having never playing the first Destiny, I was expecting combat gameplay to feel very similar to Halo, where you must use a different strategy to deal with each enemy type. However, what I experienced was basically a shallow run and gun FPS and I quickly became bored and uninstalled the game after reaching the settlement.

Having said that, I'm glad to see the PC version sell well. The more attention publishers and developers give to the PC platform, the better.
