Out of the Blue

How Billy Squier Ended up Leading an On-Air MTV Holiday Singalong. I don't have to read it, since I was there. That handsome teenager(!) standing second from the far right in the faded jeans, white sneakers, and greenish button down shirt (which I remember as being gray, so the colors are a bit off) is me enjoying one of the perks of my first job. I'm also featured in a close-up (mostly of my back) after the dancing cameraman where I seem to be distinctly off-beat with my clapping as I show off my butt doing my best 80s white-boy dancing with Billy. I'll echo the sentiments of Martha Quinn from the article, that this was one of my favorite moments of my MTV career, and I am awash with fond memories of all the characters I worked with back in those days. Remember, Christmas is the time to say I love you. Happy holidays.

Speaking of the 80s, I actually watched some Miami Vice yesterday. Man, that was just such a great show. I hear Vin Diesel wants to reboot it, sigh. MV worked for the time because Miami had all the Cocaine Cowboys and it was crazy during that period. The reality is completely different today. You can't recapture that sort of magic. It was just the right show for the right place and time. Man, I still remember so many guys walking around in 84/85 trying to rock the Sonny look, heh.
I never got into that series, but loved its theme song! Actually, a lot of 80s theme songs like Knight Rider, Air Wolf, etc.

Hey Blue, you've probably answered this question 100 times before but... what did you do at MTV? Is that where you met the missus?

Also, at the 2:28 mark Nina was TOTALLY checking you out, you should have dropped the hammer sir!

Haha, not sure how I missed all the obvious signs.

I started at MTV in the programming department calling people part time with music surveys (hence the teenager part). I eventually moved to VH-1 programming where I scheduled the promos, and later the music. Then I joined production at VH-1 as an associate producer where I did VJ segments and produced the countdown show.
What did you do after that? Quake News?

My car has 17"s but also comes in 19"s. I've been given a loaner with the the 19"s when I was having warranty work done and didn't really notice the difference. IMO it comes down to how much you like the look of the larger tires vs. the increased cost of up keep.
All things being equal (and that your car and suspension is designed/tuned for the size, sidewall height stays proportional etc) a taller tire will provide a more comfortable ride.
Imagine driving around on 4 inch tires, you would feel every imperfection in the road that a 14" tire would roll over with ease.

The issue with taller tires is that generally they decrease in aspect ratio (sidewall height) and have to make up for it with stiffer sidewalls, therefore decreasing the vehicles effective suspension.

Well when you're looking at different trims of the same car the tire size is really rim size. So a 19" rim is going to have a shorter sidewall than a 17" rim. I don't think the actual tire size changes at all, just the rim. Having a physically larger tire would require more work than just swapping out tires.
Sorry, i was not actually responding to your post as much as i was expounding on my minuscule tire knowledge.
This site does a good job of explaining tire size changes. https://www.thoughtco.com/plus-and-minus-sizing-your-tires-3234471

I had Falkens, purchased on sale, and eventually moved up to the Consumer Reports highest rated Michelin's. They were maybe $30 more per tire. But the difference in ride quality was shocking.

Weird. I've had Falkens on my mazda 6 and my wife's Fiesta, and they are very comfortable tires. Also grip like a champ, and have little road noise to them. I quite enjoy Falken tires. (And Mercedes and Porsche put Falkens on their mid-range cars, so clearly they're pretty good.)

They were likely lower end Falkens and top tier Michelins.

So I reckon the Steam sale is starting tomorrow, jah?

Any car guys have thoughts on tires/rims? In my research it seems to be that smaller rims and tires 15/16" provide a more comfortable ride and better fuel economy. Is that true? I've honestly never given a lot of thought to tyres/rims. I do know however I don't like those stupid large ones and low profile tires that hip hop artists all seem to be enamored with.

I just ask because the models I'm looking at range from 16/17/18 inch depending on the package. Can you get a better package with the smaller tires and corresponding price break?

Well... That's not a simple question to answer, really. It depends.

Typically a smaller diameter tire also has a smaller tire width. In such cases, a smaller tire does get you better mileage. This is simple physics, it's a smaller amount of rubber causing resistance on the road, thus your engine has to work less hard. Not sure how much it breaks down to, I'm guessing a couple percent per 10mm or so?

But if you go from a 215/65R16 to a 215/60R15 (numbers pulled out of my ass, don't kill me if there is no such thing as a 215/60R15), it's not really going to make much difference.

I would imagine a smaller tire would be slightly easier to turn, torgue wise, so your engine potentially would have to work a miniscule amount less, maybe? Though that's likely more to do with the tire width, again, than the diameter of the wheel.

Whether it gives better ride comfort... I would imagine that has more to do with the compound of the tire and the stiffness of the suspension than the wheel size on it. I never really noticed much difference between 15s and 16s. My Mustang has 18s, but it's got a pretty stiff suspension, so the ride comfort is definitely less than the 16s I had on my Mazda 6.

Obviously the tires themselves will be cheaper if you go smaller, but I don't think you're really going to do yourself many favors if you drop 2 inches or more on your car. Your car was designed and calibrated to have an X" diameter wheel on it, not one that's 2 inches smaller.

Furthermore, you'd have to buy new rims too, so that'd likely wipe out any real savings you'd see?

In any case, long story short, imho never skimp on tires. They're the only thing between you sitting there, heart racing, thanking yourself for spending money on good tires, and you sitting there moaning with your face in your airbag and your car halfway up someone's trunk.
