Get Company of Heroes 2 for Free

The Humble Store now offers Company of Heroes 2 for free, allowing Windows, macOS, and Linux gamers the chance to play the World War II strategy sequel. This is a limited-time offer, but those who take advantage will have the game permanently added to their Steam libraries. Here's a refresher on the game:

Experience the ultimate RTS WWII platform with the original COH2 and its standalone expansions: The Western Front Armies (multiplayer), Ardennes Assault (single-player) and The British Forces (multi-player). Multiplayer standalones (sold separately) allow you to play on any map against anyone owning any COH2 product. The original Company of Heroes 2 game gives you access to two multiplayer armies from the Eastern Front: the Red Army (SOV) and the Wehrmacht Ostheer (GER). It also comes with a gritty single-player campaign that will give you a chance to familiarize yourself with the series core tenets. Step into the boots of a Soviet commander of the Red Army, entrenched in brutal frontline warfare to free Mother Russia from the Enemy invaders! Adjust your tactics to take into account the brutal weather conditions and wield the might of the Soviet Empire as you smash your way to Berlin.

Powered by the Essence Engine 3.0, the Company of Heroes 2 series feature some unique mechanics rewarding thoughtful players. From the TrueSight™ system that emulates the units’ line of sight to the cover-system that encourages clever unit placement – not to mention the combined arms approach and the hard and soft counters gameplay that will make you think twice before trying to destroy a tank with a simple squad of riflemen – each game presents players with an uninterrupted stream of meaningful tactical choices that can turn the tide of war.

COH2 felt like an incomplete game and looked like it was geared towards microtransactions so heavily that it pissed me off.

I bought a while back some game of the year package and it *still* didn't unlock all of the DLC campaigns, which *really* pissed me off.

I have their battle of the bulge campaign and was enjoying the hell out of that until I got to a mission that I literally could not win. Within 3 minutes of starting the mission I'm swamped by a dozen tanks and a bajillion dudes. I'm still waiting for the research on my bazooka to finish. Literally impossible to win.

I quit and haven't gone back since I'm assuming that the rest of the game will just cheat that way.

When I played the closed beta you could actually pick your commander(s) and their perks. Not after release. I love both games but it was hard to swallow the theft that was CoH2 CE. They gave very little info of what the items actually were and upon release it was obvious that it was all geared for microtransactions and a slow grind to get loot box drops on occasion. What a joke.

All they had to do is expand on the first with other regions and armies and most of us would have gladly paid for those DLCs and a sequel. Instead they created a game around microtransactions and/or loot box drops that would give you better commanders with some different perks.

They lost a loyal customer in me. Doubt I will buy CoH3 but if I do it will be at a fraction of the full price.

Good for a lark! I think I only played through the campaign once, though the DLC normandy campaign design is better than the launch one, though it's Russian infuriating narrative is awesome. I find it hard to go back to COH, COH2 has some quality of life stuff that is real nice.

But I will forever be disappointed that they rested on their laurels and gave us more of the same instead of pushing the anachronistic, tepid genre forward like they did with that first game, where they pretty much rebuilt the genre from scratch.

Hopefully the third game, if it happens, will get us to the next level. Something on the scale and detail of MOWAS2 of even TA but with Relic polish and UI would be amazing. Did not like DOW3. Too much going on with too few tools to deal with it.

It was a trainwreck at release but they slowly patched it up to be pretty good. I still prefer the first COH though, broken AI and all. I have something crazy like 400 multiplayer hours in that game, it was the go-to for my group of friends. I think the only game I've put more time into was L4D2.

Playing: Ni No Kuni 2, Persona 5, Vermintide 2

Cool. I haven't played in ages but I saw there's a big balance patch incoming so might be a good time to get in and see what's up.
