Bungie Backs off Destiny 2 Misstep

Bungie announces a response to the backlash over the new Curse of Osiris expansion for Destiny 2, as players are not happy that this locked one of the most prized guns to the expansion after it was available as part of the original release of the first-person shooter. Word is: "We’ve heard from the community that both of these plans aren’t working. The Prestige Raid was a novel experience that players value, even if they don’t own Curse of Osiris, and it was a mistake to move that experience out of reach. Throughout the lifetime of the Destiny Franchise, Trials has always required that players owned the latest Expansion. However, for Destiny 2, Trials of The Nine launched as part of the main game, so it’s not right for us to remove access to it. To make matters worse, our team overlooked the fact that both of these mistakes disabled Trophies and Achievements for Destiny 2. This was an unacceptable lapse on our part, and we can understand the frustration it has created." Here are the changes coming in a hotfix this week:

Therefore, this week, we will release a hotfix that will make the following changes:

  • The Prestige Leviathan Raid will be brought back down to Power 300, and its rewards will drop down to match the new Power Level. All players will regain access to the Prestige Raid.
    • This will allow access to “The Prestige” Achievement/Trophy for all players.
    • This will also allow all players ability to complete the final step for the Legend of Acrius Exotic Shotgun.
  • Trials of The Nine will only require Curse of Osiris when it features a Curse of Osiris map. For all other weeks, it will be available to all players.
    • This will allow access to “Lest Ye Be Judged” Achievement/Trophy for all players.
    • Trials of The Nine rewards that launched with Destiny 2 will still be accessible to all players.
    • New Seasonal Rewards that launched with Curse of Osiris, such as the new Seasonal Armor Ornaments, will require ownership of Curse of Osiris to acquire.
  • The Prestige Nightfall will remain a pinnacle activity, at the new 330 Power cap.
    • This means Prestige Nightfall will require ownership of Curse of Osiris.
    • Because of this, we will update “The Prestige” Achievement/Trophy to only reference The Prestige Raid.
    • Moving forward, we are investigating adding a 3rd difficulty to all Prestige activities, so that we can provide both a challenge that stays relevant with each new Expansion, and a Prestige version that is available to all players.
  • Normal Nightfall will only require Curse of Osiris when it features a Curse of Osiris map. For all other weeks it will be available to all players.
  • Time limited events – Iron Banner, Faction Rally, and The Dawning, will be made available to all players.
    • We will be postponing tomorrow’s Faction Rally, to ensure all of our players can access the activity and the appropriate rewards.
    • Iron Banner and Faction Rally rewards that launched with Destiny 2 will still be accessible to all players.
    • New Seasonal Rewards that launch with Curse of Osiris, such as the new Seasonal Armor Ornaments, will require ownership of Curse of Osiris to acquire.

We expect these changes to go live tomorrow at the end of scheduled maintenance to deploy Update 1.1.1.1. Moving forward, we are also looking to improve on Heroic Strikes, with new challenges, new Modifiers, and free access for all players.

I really don't care about raids, but I just logged in now to see that the weekly open world PVE objective is for the new DLC-exclusive planet... That's disappointing, since hopping on for an hour or so once a week to run a few public events is one of the few things I've still been doing to ever so slowly grind up my power level. Sometimes I'll do the PVP weekly, but the matchmaking is so hit or miss that I usually don't have the patience for that bullshit.

Anyway, guess I'm not playing at all this week, thanks Bungie. Keep this up and I might as well uninstall until I maybe eventually buy the season pass on sale.

Heh - "Mistake". Yeah right. Fucking Activision was obviously trying to force people into buying the expansion. I enjoy Destiny 2 well enough but Activision are scum of the highest order and this is typical bullshit from them.

Bungie continue to amaze me. I don't know if it's benign incompetence or if they're just scummy at this point...

Starting off with *7 hours* of maintenance/down-time during prime-time for the filthy EU peons, yet again! Destiny is an MMO and is marketed as such. However, Bungie being the prize clowns that they are, don't bother having separate maintenance windows for different regions, like, y'know, pretty much every other company operating a globally marketed MMO in 2017. Instead, the game is shut down for a minimum of 4 hours on a weekly basis, essentially. Last week was 6 hours but that was DLC-day. This week, though, it's 7. freaking. hours. From 1500 UTC to 2200 UTC. As in, right when people get off work/school and well into the afternoon. Tuesday is your gaming day? Tough luck. I swear, if D2 had actual content and was the kind of game I spent my entire workday looking forward to playing once I got home, I'd be less exasperated and more outright livid.

As for this debacle. How the hell did they expect to get away with withdrawing content? Oh wait, according to people who played D1, they did the exact same thing there.

- Prestige Leviathan brought down to 300. Yay. No more guaranteed 330 drops from the raid for the people who actually bought Osiris then? Awesome. Hope you got your's during week 1.
- Trials available to all players so long as it does not feature an Osiris-map. LOL. So you're not locked out all the time, but still fairly frequently. How's that for purchasing incentive. How about just having separate queues/playlists for people who didn't buy the DLC, like any decent developer would? If this isn't admitting a low level of confidence (perfectly warranted, btw) in the quality of their own DLC, I don't know what is.
- Same goes for Nightfall. Not locked out 100% of the time, but there will be weeks you can't play it. I.e. you're locked out of content you previously had. Why not just put the non-DLC people on a separate rotation?
- Prestige Nightfall deemed a pinnacle activity. Yep, you're still locked out if you didn't get the DLC. Again, how about different prestige levels? Call the new one Prestige +1 and require 330 and the old one Prestige and require 300. Sounds like a no-brainer that any other company would've gone for at the start.

Hey, at least people on PC got a whole 6 weeks of standard Prestige Leviathan on their non-DLC'd game before they got locked out or forced cough up another $20 though, right? I'll defend them somewhat in the DLC department in that, as an MMO, it's the kind of game where it (IMO) does not make much sense to keep playing without staying on top of additional content packs. But their end of that bargain is that the content should add stuff, not take it away. Osiris is pretty pathetic in that regard. You know it has to be when even IGN brings out the 5/10 for a AAA dev/publisher. They could have included it in the base game for free and it still wouldn't have made a shred of difference because it basically amounts to nothing. In the sense that its removal would've been unnoticed anyway, selling it for an additional $20 down the line is pure genius

Maybe I'm just overly critical at this point, but I don't understand why people are considering this a good thing for Bungie to do. They are literally doing the bare minimum they need to do to prevent people from returning their games based on Sony/Microsoft policy.

Basically, since Bungie modified the game such that certain achievements were no longer attainable and content was removed without buying the DLC, Amazon and Microsoft (Sony was giving them time to fix it) were allowing people to get full refunds on Destiny 2. So now, Bungie does the bare minimum they need to do to avoid that situation at the cost of hurting people who bought the DLC and delaying their planned events.

This was a good moment for Bungie to step up and make some grand showing of support for the community with their lackluster release and first DLC, but instead they scrape together this patch as quickly as they can to protect their wallets.

You know what would of also solved this problem and resulted in a ton of good will? Give CoO away to all players for free and promise a 4th DLC to season pass holders. This DLC is largely a disappointment in general and although this would be costly, you win a lot of customer satisfaction and then can plan a more permanent fix to the issue.

I'm sure though that anyone that suggested anything like that to Activision was quickly fired for not aligning with the company vision of milking players for as much as they can.

Fucking poor gamers who don't want to buy an expansion.

All that aside, the expansion is pretty junk.

I'm hoping they mean that power levels will scale with your own power level and just won't be level 300 drops.

I hit 307 and basically hit a hard ceiling. I can probably get that up to 310 with legendary equipment mod grinding. Yay. Anything higher than that I need to team up and my friends aren't on freqently enough. I'm probably done unless my friends raid or get together for nightfall strikes.

I'm not giving another dime. I already paid for the game, and finished it.

I play games to finish them; not to endlessly pay more to never finish them.

It does take a little bit to get used to the key bindings and different abilities you have, upgrading amour and weapons etc.

Someone mentioned Warframe in the other Destiny thread the other day so I've decided to give that a try and I am hooked! Can't stop playing it!
It's perfect for those of us all poor due to holiday shopping
Reading all the drama about Destiny, I am not too upset I did not get the expansion. I'd rather spend that money on Warframe.

I tried and tried to get into it but it was just too...weird. I was absolutely lost after they give you you're ship and set you off on your own. Maybe one day I'll go back. The KB+Mouse keybinding was kinda weird, too. I really wanted to like it but it was just too...foreign and off base for me, I guess. 'Then go back to COD, Rigs, you mutt!'...yeah, yeah...

Good on them for admitting an oversight (in the best case), and quickly implementing a solution...

Hopefully, the solution improves as they have more time with it... As in, the raid should be available to each power level, but that would require significantly higher effort (including some UI changes).
