Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag Giveaway Underway

A little earlier than expected, this Ubisoft Free Events page now offers the promised free release of Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag, saying the seafaring installment in the assassination series is being offered for free for the next week (thanks RedEye9). This requires Uplay to download, and the game will be yours to keep, even after the conclusion of the giveaway. Here's the refresher on the game:
In Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, you are Edward Kenway, a pirate out to make a name for himself on the tumultuous Caribbean seas by sailing your ship among the isles in search of plunder, attacking enemy vessels, and diving below the waves for lost treasures. Become embroiled in the conflicts of the era and discover your connection to the series’ age-old struggle between the Assassins and the Templars.

Yeah that is actually the hardest of all 4 of them. Those two are brutal, and I tend to lose to them once or twice before I beat them. You kind of have to get a bit lucky with them. The fact they are significantly faster than you is a real PITA.

The other 3 really aren't that difficult. I've beaten them with maybe only 75% of possible upgrades to see if it could be then, but those two you really NEED at least legendary hull, cannons, ram and mortar for.

TBH I didn't even get to the other 2. I got one relatively easily, then went against the 2 ships, couldn't beat em, then just kinda lost interest, had already put in over 100 hours into the game.

Fuck I miss exploring with a ship, so much more satisfying finding a genuine mystery island rather than exploring in the more curated Origins experience.

They really need to do another proper pirate game, or just ships. Maybe something like channeling the whole "Master and Commander: Far side of the World" vibe...

Personally, I thought that Bruhhood and Revelations were both kinda OK after the excellent AC2 but they did not stand out in any way.

I like AC2 better than Brotherhood, but Brotherhood is the only other game in which you get to play as not-old Ezio (I hate revelations for that), and it is the second part of the story, so I kind of feel they go together.

Personally, I thought that Bruhhood and Revelations were both kinda OK after the excellent AC2 but they did not stand out in any way.

I'd also put Black Flag (+ DLC like Freedom Cry/Aveline) as the no. 1 AC game, followed closely by AC 2, then nothing for a long time, then Bruhhood/Revelations, then Rogue, then AC 3 and finally AC 1.

Haven't played anything after Rogue yet so can't rank Unity/Syndicate/Origins.

Also, there's 4 optional "uber" enemy ships to take on for the end game, I only ever beat one of them, even with almost all legendary upgrades to my ship. Very difficult, very fun challenges.

Hmmm... are you sure that your ship was really FULLY upgraded? Those battles were actually quite easy with a fully decked out Jackdaw.
The most challenging parts of Black Flag (which really just required some trial & error) were some of the harder diving missions. Damn sharks!

Yeah, the "AC" parts of it aren't very strong at all, but totally worth it to get to your ship, which you get at around the 3-hour mark.

It's not the best AC. Edward is actually a bit of a mope, and the AC parts of the game really aren't that good anyway. It has like a dozen of the uber-hated eavesdropping missions, and they will drive you to madness many times.

But the pirating part... Oh, how glorious it is. There is so much to upgrade on your ship, and the feel of progression and rising power is marvelous, even if you already become nigh-unbeatable by the time you're only halfway done with your upgrades.

Once you're at full power, engaging and wiping out dozens of Spanish War Galleons in a row is fantastic, though for more of a challenge, I'd advise you to ignore the bit-of-a-glitch ability where you can board a vessel, take it over, then use it to repair the damage to the Jackdaw while the other galleons apparently just sit there and watch you merrily tinkering away?

For free, this is an absolute no-brainer. It's the best game in the series after AC2/Brotherhood and Origins, and I could be easily persuaded that it's better than Origins.

Yeah, I was being facetious.

I honestly don't feel the "tyranny" of having a 200 MB program sit on my computer. I can delete it if I want, it's not sentient so I still have control

Game makers have the right to sell their own products, and it should be encouraged. Lest we wind up with a digital Walmart as the only place people will shop.

I've made this comparison here many times, I just want to point out that it's far less onerous to click a different icon on my desktop than drive across town to shop at a different store, and yet people seem fine with that. ESPECIALLY for products that the store themselves produce.

For 3rd party stuff, absolutely I like GoG's model the best. I'd buy everything there if I could. But I have no problem getting a game made by Ubi on Uplay. If you're going to pay for the game anyways, you might as well give your money to the people that built it, and not give a 30% skim to a middleman that did precisely nothing towards game development.

Simple concept really...

Since this was on my "get one of these days on sale" list... Heck yeah I'll take a free copy!

BTW Slick, I feel the same about Origin... still haven't installed that piece of shit. I have a small handful of Ubisoft games, that started with a fricken Steam install of Uplay... so since I already have it, I'll take the game for free.

As for Origin... they just put Dragon Age Origins on GOG (Which I did buy on sale for $5, even though I already had the pre-origin steam version... I'm trying to convert as much of my collection to GOG as possible to support them.)

So, there is hope that the few EA titles I may want will end up there eventually.
Get your games from GOG DAMMIT!

All of them are better then 3.

But here is the play order. Play Black Flag, then Rogue, and Rogue's ending is Unity's beginning.

The chronological order for the AC games after Revelations and before Syndicate is all over the place. I'm not sure if UbiSoft intended this or they had no idea where to take the series. If you like playing the timeline in order, it would be Black Flag, Rogue, AC3, and Unity.

Only play Rogue if you'd like to see the bridge between Black Flag and AC3. It does a good job providing more backstory for Haytham Kenway's side of the story (it's trippy to hunt those you called a friend in Black Flag). It also explains why the Assassin Order is decimated in AC3. You'll also see the segue from Rogue to Unity at the end. However, be warned, Rogue is a bad game. If you go from Black Flag to it, like I did, the drop in quality was quite shocking.

I only stuck with Rogue because I was enamored with the Kenway saga storyline and wanted to see where it went. That is its only redeeming quality.

I really enjoyed Rogue. The main story is kind of short, and the protagonist is just kind of okay. Certainly better than Connor or Arno. The Naval combat is more or less identical to Black Flag so if you enjoyed that part you'll enjoy it.

The main problem Rogue has, without getting into any specific spoilers, is that the Assassins are very out of character and unreasonable after the end of the first act. It's almost as if the main character has slipped into the mirror universe on the way back from the previous mission.

The main characters responses to this are quite understandable, but why the Assassins are so out of character is never really adequately addressed.

Also Haytham Kenway shows up in Rogue, and he's probably my favorite character in the series. I wish he had gotten his own full game.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
