Out of the Blue

Happy birthday to Pong, as the seminal sports videogame was first released 45 years ago today. Nerdist has a retrospective, calling it "the most important videogame ever." It's easy to see the point, as prior to that any computer games were the province of those with access mainframe computers, but Pong brought them to the masses, ushering in both arcade gaming and home consoles. The Atari brand has bounced around over the years, but the company is still out there, and they have declared today Pong Day. They celebrate by touting a new ATARI Table Pong Project that's expected next year, and going from the sublime to the ridiculous, they also offer a Limited Edition Pong Speaker Hat, which will have to speak for itself, because it leaves us speechless.

How did he stumble into that job? Was he a graphics designer?

Yeah back then the term was Commercial Artist but same same only no computers all hand drawn & taken to screen print the glass surrounds & Cabinets.
Edit
Sorry Creston I should have qualified my original post with exterior cabinet art work.

No worries man, that sounds like an awesome job!

We had an overnight of 48 and into the 60's today at work. And work wise it was very... normal. We didn't get any of the typical after Thanksgiving/Cyber Monday avalanche like last year.

It was quiet.... TOOOO QUIET.

I remember my dad coming home one day, 1975 or 76 or so, and had a little box with two paddle controllers in his hand that he'd bought that day. It was the Pong console. We played the hell out of it for awhile.

That started my life-long addiction to computer games. Thanks dad!

Have to second this....I'm sure most of us have the same story as Creston. Next up for me was the Intellivision...tho it seemed all my friends got the Atari.

Same here - I had Pong, and then the Intellivision. Intellivision soccer was awesome.

We never had pong but would go to cousins that did, it captured every kid that got within it's orbit.

Meh, I have so many gaps in my window and door frames that it probably doesn't matter either way.

Surprised to see no comment about Eli's benching in OOTB today. He's had his problems over the years but when you look at what hes had to work with, I think he's done just fine. Took the news like a champ too.

My first of the two consoles I owned in my life was a Pong clone ages ago... Later I got an Atari 2600 - and then I grew up.
