I'm interested in seeing when they finally test self-driving cars in canadian winters...

I've seen videos of MIT testing out cars maintaining DRIFT so it's interesting to see how they deal with snow drifts/ice/etc.

Important quote from the article:

Geographically, itís all still focused on the western United States

And by "Western United States" they mean California, on either private tracks or open rural or suburban roads. Up here in Washington it's been pouring rain and blowing wind for the last two weeks almost non-stop. Let me know when self-driving cars are logging miles in downtown Seattle in the middle of a November storm, then I might be interested.

There are already. BMW and Mighty AI have their primary automated driving offices in Seattle for a reason. They may be out there on a very limited basis, but it's weird that people expect it to be a billion of them on day 1.

We may not have a highway packed with autonomous vehicles, but I can see trucking and bus routes run by automated machines. Of course that means no more ďplease wait!Ē runs to a bus stop being successful...a robot wonít wait for you. Teamsters will lose their minds when their job is replaced by a robot.

Despite what the ruling class says, automation does NOT introduce more jobs. It absolutely removes them. Any new jobs related to automation are high-education jobs, and not nearly as many jobs as are being replaced by a machine. It IS a recipe for mass unemployment. The people being displaced arenít capable of doing highly technical jobs...itís why they did the ones they had. You wonít find a single person cabals of building/repairing robots working in the packing area of Amazon.

On modern trucks lane and distance sensors fail in heavy rain... and during snow-fall, and fog.. and get majorly confused when there is construction, so yeah... in the desert is one thing, but in Europe?

wheres the guy saying its 20 yrs away again?

Level 5 autonomy is still 20 years away, and that's not me saying it, that's from car makers ^^ And these tests also show that you can't bring out a fully autonomous car, human drivers end up crashing it everywhere. It's also car makers who even made up this level scale for autonomy. Level 3 is where car makers are at right now according to them, and level 4 would be where cars can autonomously drive on nearly all* roads but a driver, pedals and a wheel are still required. Level 5 is the 100% autonomous vehicle.. and Waymos cars are not even level 3 as they require pre-scripted road and track. Meaning every segment they drive on has to be scanned in and tuned, especially intersections and speed limits. A level 5 car would not need that, it would be aware of signs and road limits and be able to "read" a road correctly without previous input. It would use google maps to see how to get somewhere, and navigate a road properly to get there. And that is not even remotely what Waymo does.

But that's beside the point, because like Beamer already said, "prototype" to "market" is usually half a decade. And all you can get right now is dumb-scripted (but situational sort-of aware) level 3 cars.. in prototype stage or beta, as Tesla calls it.

Eraser said they're 20 years away, and in fairness, he means from being truly adopted and replacing regular cars. Just because Waymo has them on the road doesn't mean they're being adopted by anyone. Jury is still out, and things do take time, but I think the autonomous revolution will be somewhat swift. I can't imagine it's more than 5 years before Uber is doing a widespread test in some market, and imagine that within 10 years taking a ride that isn't autonomous will feel odd in NYC.

dubfanatic thinks they'll never be a thing.

Google makes a smartwatch, or just the os?
In either case I can safely put that info in file 13.
