Out of the Blue

At times, the sentiment behind the R.I.P. notations that occasionally (or these days seemingly frequently) appear here has been called into question, since saying Rest In Peace (or Requiescat In Pace) about arguably (or unarguably) evil people seems an unwarranted kindness. Besides how believers will tell you that judging these things is the sole province of the almighty, some of those involved in these discussions have correctly surmised that this is not actually an endorsement of the individual in question. It's just a shorthand introduction to the news of the person's death and their obituary, as opposed to saying something like "he's dead Jim." Please know that this is never meant as an endorsement or a way of overlooking wrongdoing. I'm not sure why I chose today to explain that today, I guess it's just one of those helter skelter thoughts that popped into my mind.

Think I'll just stick with the same heartfelt quip I said for my step-dad:

i always got the vibe from manson (especially that stupid "i'm no one" interview with all the silly faces) that i got from the edgy loser kids in high school trying super hard to freak other people out to leverage some kind of power over them, any goddamn kind of tenuous emotional power to feel less pathetic. he really was just a worthless sack of piss, not in the least frightening, just a net negative on the human race.

i admittedly get this vibe a lot when they put spree killers in front of cameras; that little douche who dyed his hair and shot up a movie theater gives it to me too: the aura of a bullied high school pussy who finally got a gun in his hand.

just rambling, i guess. i just always hated the bullshit mystique the media crafts around these fucking clowns.

Rest in Peace was used before jesus was even a twinkle in Joseph and Marys eye. It has been found inscribed in Hebrew on gravestones dating from the 1st century BC.

That is not completely accurate. There are some Jewish tombstones that quote Isaiah 57:2: Those who live uprightly enter a place of peace; they rest on their beds.

However, RIP is originally Latin and isn't used on tombstones until around the 8th century. Even then, it use doesn't become prominent until the 18th century

Looked it up, since I hadn't heard this conspiracy theory before, and it doesn't appear to be a very compelling one. It's on par with Sandy Hook hoaxers.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

And no Manson didn't believe in Christ, he believed he was the Messiah - just like every other whackjob cult leader. And no he's not in hell because there is no hell anymore than there's any other post-life fantasy.

Still you have to hand it to him. I mean convincing people you're divine and getting them to go out and murder because you say so is impressive. It's like suicide bombers. Convincing someone to strap a bomb to themselves and blow people up is amazing when you consider the vast majority of us can't even convince our friends to help us move.
Wry

I don't believe Manson believed he was divine. Maybe at some point during LSD trips he'd believe it.

Manson's "upbringing" in jail included learning how to assemble women to prostitute from pimps, Dale Carnegie's How to Make Friends and Influence People, and believe it or not Scientology. He built his messiah gig up explicitly to leech off of other people, at first women, and then men. He bargained sex with girls he could control for food, money, and ultimately, access to the recording industry where he felt he was destined to be bigger than the Beatles. And he managed to do all that at a time, and in a scene, where easy access to sex and drugs could get you into the circles of fairly powerful people. If you want an *excellent* look at Manson, and how he fit into LA and Hollywood's 60's culture, go check out the podcast You Must Remember This. Karina Longworth did a 6 or 7 part series on Manson and it is really, really excellent. I'd almost consider it one of the definitive examinations of Manson.

The seating position visibility issues are actually (mostly) taken care of by the twin LCD screens. During normal driving, they give a view significantly better than rear view mirrors. However, he makes a very good point about forward visibility and having to move over to look past another truck, I didn't think about that.

I don't understand why they did the central seating position, other than a "LOOKITHOWCOOLWEARE!" gimmick. It doesn't work. There's a reason we sit close to the center median depending on which side of the road we drive on.

I think "RIP" is fine to announce a death, regardless of the quality of that person's accomplishments in life.

Has anyone read William Barton's Acts of Conscience? It's one of the better science fiction books I've read, both from both a world building and character perspective.

It's not for everyone given the flaws of the main character, but I found it fascinating and deep.
