Outcast - Second Contact Released

Publisher Bigben and developer Appeal now offer the promised release of Outcast - Second Contact for Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The launch trailer provides a look at this remake that uses the source code from the original Outcast. Here's the news:

Set off on a wondrous journey and discover the marvelous planet of Adelpha. But this trip is for business, not pleasure! A mission of utmost importance is waiting for you! Embody Cutter Slade, the most badass soldier in the U.S. Navy, as he's sent to an alien planet to recover a damaged probe that's threatening to destroy the Earth. Hailed as a messiah (L'Ulukaï) on your arrival, you find yourself swept up in an adventure where the destiny of two entire worlds is in your hands.

Outcast — Second Contact was developed from the original's source code, but the voxels of the time have been replaced with more optimised graphics. New elements were added to make its gameplay more modern and dynamic, such as new types of combat, dodging abilities for Cutter Slade, and a reinforced AI for the enemies. Finally, a revised and more accessible interface will guide players through this adventure worthy of the greatest sci-fi films.

  • An open world inhabited by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization.
  • Total freedom with your missions and actions, which have consequences on the balance of the world.
  • More than 50 hours of gameplay in this heart-pounding adventure.
  • Spectacular fights thanks to an extensive arsenal and futuristic gadgets.

Outcast - Second Contact is now available on PlayStation®4, Xbox One and PC.

I just finished playing through the original. It was definitely a classic, but not without it's flaws.

My favorite thing about this game was the enemy AI was pretty advanced for a late 90s era game. Groups would split up, use cover, and flank you if possible. Their main weakness was you could snipe them from cover at a distance with impunity.

It had Lots of glitches involving NPCs or items not spawning at the right time, thus preventing completion of certain quest lines. It also had really clunky sluggish wsad control, and awful aiming.

Based on the early reviews, none of that has changed, it is straight up re-skin only, so I am going to pass at this point.

I have Outcast 1.1 and the original still on disc including the box. Needless to say a huge Outcast fan here.

This update is totally worth it. I mean I got it with a 45% discount on Steam but wouldn't go after it for more than that. It's totally worth 20 bucks. It's the same game with a graphic make over and it's a beauty. The moment you appear in the farmlands and hear that symphony kick in, you will have nostalgic memories immediately.

I see a lot of hater reviews on Steam but don't know exactly what else they were expecting. It's an awesome overhaul but nothing overly done. The game is nearly identical in every aspect gameplay wise. They added a sprint feature which I guess is neat but then an annoying dodge feature which I could do without. Otherwise, everything else is mostly faithful including the amazing sound effects and fun voice acting.

Highly recommended for old time fans and newcomers that don't have a clue what they missed out on in 1999.

Outcast 1.1 from is already really very playable and solid.

I'm not sure who this game is marketed to.

Yeah the graphics are nicer but that's seems to be all there is. No added features like deformable terrain, physics, reactive particles or reactive environment.

I watched the trailer on Steam for this last night and I'm optimistic. Outcast was a great game with an incredibly unique look thanks to it's voxel engine. The remake obviously eschews that for more modern day tech but the look and feel I get from the trailer are very close to the original (if missing some of the charm of the original). Thankfully they kept the protagonist's uber-cheesy name and personality.
