Decksplash Grinds to a Halt

The Decksplash website has word from Bossa Studios that their experimental free first-week launch of Decksplash was not a success. They offered a no-cost early version of the skateboarding game with the goal of getting 100,000 players to download it to prove there was enough interest for them to continue with the project. The game didn't face-plant, but they did not hit that mark, so they are staying true to their word and ending development:

Decksplash unfortunately didn't hit it's target and production on the game will now stop.

We always knew that 100k was a big target, but it was the only way to make sure the game was a viable product for both yourselves and us in the long term, now we've gotten our answer.

We want to thank everyone who supported us during the Free Week and let you all know that while this is the end of our story, we're glad we got to share it with you.

The team working on Decksplash will now move onto other projects, taking the knowledge gained from the past year to build an even better game.

At Bossa Studios we believe the best way to make games is to fail fast and move on to bigger, better things rather than sinking time into a project without a bright future.

So from all of us here in the Decksplash team, Thank you for your support and we'll see you on our next big adventure!

Love Decksplash.

I tried it. Huge Tony Hawk's Pro Skater fan back in the day. Played the demo for the first one before it was released and was hooked.

Decksplash had potential, but the controls were somewhat unintuitive, much worse than the classic tony hawk controls.. and the expectation to hit 100k players in a week with little to no advertising is ridiculous. They are never going to settle on a game to make apparently with standards like this.

Anyway back to the game, it played like a mix between splatoon and skate/tony hawk group vs mode with wonky controls. You had to hold the right trigger on the controller to go forward like it was a racing game, lol.

Um, maybe give the game a chance and try a few more times? Fix your marketing and relaunch. What a waste.

They probably would have seen a lot higher numbers if more people knew about it in advance. I didn't see anything until it was happening and, while it's not a genre I'm interested in, I imagine that there were a ton of people who would have liked to try it out that never knew it was going on in the first place.

edit: wtf did it change the subject line to Endless Space 2 on my reply for. freaky.

"We totally expected this to just become more popular than PUBG for a week!"

Something tells me they didn't want to continue and just thought up of an interesting way to broach that subject.

This.. is the dumbest thing I read this week... average sales for 99% of PC games are 30k (and that was before the flood gates opened and steam became unusable) ! Expecting to exceed that by 3x in a week is hilarious absurd. (even free ;p)
