Out of the Blue

Things have been very mild around these parts so far this fall, but that seems about to change. The forecast is calling for it to drop well below freezing tonight, which will be the first frost since spring. This seems awfully late in the season for this, but I don't keep track of such things, so it may actually be normal. Anyway, it's a little odd, since it hasn't been as low as 32F before now, but it's possible tonight it will reach below 20F.

Why are you fixated on the 1050 Ti? You'd get much better future proofing with a 1070 Ti.

Budget? I'm not spending $500 for a video card. That's just crazy wallet.

Besides going from a GTX 960 to a 1050 Ti is a sizeable upgrade.

Instead of spending $200 each year, you spend $450 and keep it for 3-4 years.

I don't buy video cards every year. Never have, never will. I bought my GTX 960 in 2015. It's been good for me since.
So did I when I was a hardcore gamer. I am still using my 512 MB of VRAM video cards: ATI Radeon 4870 and GeForce 8800 GT!

Oof, they're basically the same card. I didn't realize they were so close in performance.

Also,
1050 Ti cores: 2432
1070 Ti cores: 768

I dunno, I'd almost just skimp on the proc, mboard, and mem and put the money into graphics if I needed to keep the entire system one price.
I think you swapped the CUDA Cores.

Yeah... if you've got a 960, buying a 1050 Ti is a waste of money, it's barely faster.

EDIT: Derp, that's already been pointed out apparently.

You'll be very happy with the 1050ti. I replaced my HD7850/1gb with one, an eVGA 4gb variant. Paid a whole $181. Best upgrade I've gotten in a while. No problems whatsoever with it and it's quieter than my PSU. (Asus Earthwatts 650, almost nine years old and still kickin') I've been eyeing those 1070ti's but they are way overpriced right now. Probably will be for some time to come. Eventually, though, I'm gonna have to retire the ol' Gigabyte P55M-UD2 and Core i5-750/2.6. I'd say if they last until their 10th birthday, (two years from now) I'll be happy. *shrugs*

The privatization and corruption of the military industrial complex is an issue separate from the individual soldier.

I definitely don't blame the soldiers for it. They are just doing a job, and frankly the recruiting process can be very exploitative. But I'm also not really comfortable putting them on a pedestal, given the role of the US military, as a group, in the world today.

Today is Veteran's Day in the USA. If you have served in the military, you have my respect and gratitude, not just today, but every day. Thank you.

Tomorrow is Veteran's Day.

Also, unfortunately I gotta agree with (some) of what Cutter is saying about Veterans Day here. It's seriously lost its shine as I've gotten older and learned a lot of stuff about the US military that we didn't learn about when I was in school.

While I'll certainly always be grateful to those who fought against potential conquerors, the US military is entirely co-opted as a money making venture for corporate interests at this point.

It's true that today is the VD holiday, not the actual day.

Wolves must have watched the honey badger video.

That video(and article) is really interesting... the sample sizes are small obviously, but apparently a lot of dogs are simply too selfish(?) or just too stupid or too competitive to cooperate in the rope pull. I wonder how much experiementation the wolves had to go through to get the hang of the rope demo, and if they gave the failing dogs the same amount. The article goes on to describe further observed differences outside the video, pretty large behavioral differnces considering how genetically close dogs and wolves are. Awesome stuff.
