Steam Win10 Usage Dips; Win7 Surges

Beta News notes an interesting tidbit picked up from the latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey (thanks [H]ardOCP), showing Windows 7 usage surging at the expense of Windows 10. They also seem to have zeroed in on the cause of this shift, noting a large uptick in Chinese users on Steam which seems to correlate pretty closely with the OS change. Here's word:
The latest stats from Steam show Windows 10 shedding a massive 17.38 percentage points, to give it 28.6 percent share. (The 64-bit version accounts for 28.23 percent, and the 32-bit version adds a tiny 0.37 percent).

Meanwhile, Windows 7 has gained a whopping 21.47 percentage points in the same month, climbing to 65.46 percent (63.60 percent for the 64-bit build, and 1.86 percent for the 32-bit edition).

You could be forgiven for thinking that Steam has made a mistake here, or that gamers are turning their backs on Windows 10 in huge numbers, but it seems likely that at least a sizable portion of the change can be attributed to China's influence.

According to the Language section of Steam’s survey, Simplified Chinese surged 26.83 percentage points to 56.37 percent in October, while English fell 13.40 percentage points to 21.24 percent. It seems reasonable, therefore, to assume that Chinese gamers running Windows 7 are responsible for much of the shift we’re seeing here. There's no official word from Steam on this yet.

"They're gonna get in anyway" isn't a very compelling argument to "upgrade" to W10 (not that you're trying to convince anyone to do so). Someone said earlier that Microsoft doesn't sell your data. I don't want them to have my data in the first place.

You do know that they have been routinely patching a lot of that functionality into Windows 7 as well right? Its just they haven't been trumpeting it very loudly. There are articles stating that MS is still collecting your data from Windows 7 and 8.

So unless you've not been patching your OS at all, you're just as screwed as the rest of the Windows 10 users. Uhoh

And if you haven't been patching your OS at all, you're screwed in entirely different ways.

Really who isn't taking data from you? And what exactly do they get? Can you trust their words?

There gonna get in anyway isn't my argument to upgrade, just saying making that a cornerstone of not upgrading is laughable at this point in many ways. But if you think they already rake us back and forth, what does it even matter anymore? We were at game over in this sector years ago now.

For years, every time a product crashes, they've requested it. They're not just being proactive about it.

Steam takes all the same data, too. When that happened, people were concerned, but the reality is it makes troubleshooting games so much more effective.

To the other guy about the Win10 Start menu being bad, it is superior to 7. My guess you just don't understand it all that well and take advantage of it and that is without any 3rd party apps, but if there was an app to improve it or other things, that is the beauty of a pc.

Yeah the start menu is a notable step up, being able to pin literally everything I want to it (like SMB links) is nice too and the application search actually works this time around.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone does anything else - why people care about the brand rather than the price point.

Because feature set is more important than price to some of us. For example, IPC numbers are about 9th on my 10 reasons for buying a CPU. #1 is core count and #2 is multithreaded performance followed by #3 which is how much memory can I stuff in to a board without resorting to going to a server class system. Next comes IOMMU groups and virtualization support.

There are also other concerns as well. IME should be a very large concern to most people, especially with the revelation that it has a webserver in it. But it isn't because "MAH GAMEZ" is more important to people than having not just services and OSes calling home and transmitting data about you but now your hardware is, too. That should be a giant red flag to anyone who gives a shit about actually owning their hardware. Alas, it isn't because "MAH GAMEZ", "MAH FACEBOOK", and "MAH TWITTER".

Amazon opened a store in Seattle with no staff and no checkout. Just pick up the items you like and walk out with them. You first tell the store who you are, then it can track your movements, the products you interact with, the ones you carry around, and the one you walk out the door with, and charge your Amazon account accordingly.

Wow, pretty crazy. Is it currently a test bed, or been in existence for a while now?

Actually, I guess it technically never opened. It was open to employees, and may still be, but they never managed to roll it out wider because it couldn't track more than 20 people at a time.

I'd guess, though, it's the type of thing that they've been iterating on quietly. Imagine having it in Whole Foods? Much larger, much more difficult, and weighed items become a minor issue, but it's absolutely doable.

You should probably stop using GMail, Social Media, and your cell phone then.

Unlike Windows 10, none of those can track every application I run, every keystroke I type, and every website I visit.

Your cellphone can.
And, unlike those companies, Microsoft isn't selling your data.

They're firewalling the Windows data from the internet data - what they're collecting via cookies. The Windows data is hard to actually analyze, and doesn't really give any better detail than cookie data. Right now, it's all about making Windows run better, and I don't think they'll change that much.

Again, if they're getting all the other information they want from your internet usage, why change that? They also don't have the huge advertising network Google does, and don't appear to be making attempts to change that. Advertising is only as good as the units available to sell, and unless people realistically think we're going to start getting ads inside Windows itself (other than the Windows store stuff I've seen twice.)
