I beg to differ, you fail to take into account a very important variable. The X1X release and their promise to bring 4k60fps to a whole bunch of titles and the only way they'll be able to achieve this is by cutting the performance requirements to fit a GPU which is in between a Vega 56 and RX580. Suddenly 4k60fps for PCs will get that much easier with quick and dirty settings tweaks...

I'm running a 970 and my monitor is only 1080p so I see no reason to upgrade any time soon. Just about everything I play runs fine for me so I'll check the next gen cards but not really motivated to upgrade unless I get a new higher res monitor

This.

That said, since my monitor is only 1080p and I have no intention of buying a new one... I'm holding out for the 2060 or 1160 (whichever nVidia calls the next xx60 card). My GTX680 still works decent for 1080p... only a few games I have to turn down the settings some.

Who exactly in your mind would sequentially buy all of the cards you just listed? You seem to be describing a crazy person.

Obviously, if you've been holding out from a previous generation, this card might hit the sweet spot for you.

Personally, it does little for me, my girl's 980 is still good enough. Volta will change that.

Also people are forgetting the 4k 144hz monitors that will hit in Q1 2018, those will be the real push for the 4k gen to stretch its legs. I'm betting that nVidia is just biding their time till they come out, as might be evidenced by those monitor manufacturers delaying them by 3-6 months in the first place.

There's no card or combination of cards that could even think of 4k @ 144hz, so it would be market suicide to launch before there was a GPU capable of powering them at least up to 80-90 fps. It all seems to point towards Volta being worth waiting for.

And a "new" product on the same 104 silicon is a great way to clear out inventory before Volta ramps up on the consumer side. I could be wrong, but it's at least plausible.

If you're on a budget, you're not looking at a 1070 Ti either. Get yourself a decent 1080P IPS monitor and a $200 AMD card. It's still great gaming.

It's a pretty sweet product, almost a 1080, but $50-100 less. Looks like the sweet spot is 1440P.

My regular 1070 already handles any game at 1440 maxed out though...

I could have sworn I heard Nvida say they'd never make a XX70ti.

They probably did say that, not expecting AMD to be able to pull off Vega as well as they did.

As for your non-Ti 1070, I'm sure it's fine, but you'd get another 7-8 frames with a Ti. But a 1070 Ti isn't quite there to power 4K at max detail at 60 FPS. Thus 1440P.

Also, what CJ said.
Even a 1080 Ti isnt up to the job 100% for 4k and 60+ FPS.
GPUs are very far behind of our current needs right now.
I think in 1 to 3 generations we can safely make 4K standard, but right now, its just not possible.
Pascal is far over a year old now too, so I would wait with buying a new one, until Volta comes out (slated Q4 2017).
Hopefully with Volta we will see mainstream cards that are able to handle 4k at least as well as a 1080 Ti.

I will do it as I have done so for a few years now: Get the new mainstream one as soon as the prices have settled from the first hype, and sell the old one while its still worth something.

1070s are more expensive than this time last year. I paid ~$385 for mine, which was a good deal, but it wasn't unheard of. Now for the same card you're looking at ~$425. It's my understanding the crypto-currency miners are to blame. So I would be surprised to see a price drop, or resellers offering compelling sales or rebates.

Yup. Damn miners. I'm just looking at a 1080 instead, at least it still sells for MSRP, rather than all this inflated bs we're seeing.

Mine doesn't - I'm on a MSI 1070 Gaming X with it overclocked as far as I can push it with showing artefacts. I still have to turn the odd setting down. As for Elite with a Rift, some of those settings are off or low.

I've learned and that's why I'm waiting patiently for the Black Friday sale on the MSI Hyper Gamer, a Limited Edition Optimum Overclocked Quad-Fan GTX 1070 Ti w/RGB lighting and water block attachments.

Many folks have a funny definition of either "maxed out" or of their perception of "handles" Wink .

With the right games and REALLY maxed out settings you can easily bring a 1080Ti to its knees in 1440p.

For example, Watch Dogs 2 or Ghost Recon Wildlands... these are both games that will drop below a solid 60fps at 1440p at max settings even on a 1080Ti.
Or The Witcher 3: It will not run anywhere near 60fps on a 1070 in 1440p with Hairworks (+AA) fully enabled (= maxed out).
Finally, Deus Ex Mankind Divided you can also forget about maxing out even on a 1080Ti. When I played the recent free weekend version, I had to dial down the AA level to get pleasant fps (still dipped below 60fps frequently).

Don't get me wrong. A GTX 1070 is certainly a decent card for 1080p/1440p but you are definitely going to have to make compromises and turn down some of the more demanding settings (like e.g. AA or HBAO+ or Screen Space Reflections or certain Gameworks effects) in quite a few modern games. To say it runs any game "maxed out" at 1440p is simply not true.

Yep, pretty weird to make this product - instead of just lower your prices on the current lineup ???

Not weird at all. With the 1070Ti they can beat Vega 56 for good instead of being slightly slower, on par, or slightly faster depending on the game.

GP-104 is very well established and it's a piece of cake for them to produce a 1070Ti chip (as well as for the board partners to produce the cards since they basically just need to print different packaging).

And xmas is coming so it makes sense to have a 'new' product to sell for the holiday season.
This is 100% win-win for nVidia and the board partners. They have already made billions from Pascal and this card will help drive up profitability even more.

Just get a GTX 1080 at those prices, offers better FPS for buck.

As for AMD, this is a decent take:

ArsTechnica wrote on Nov 2, 2017, 16:06:
The biggest loser, however, is AMD. Even if it was always part of Nvidia's grand marketing plan, it's hard to shake the feeling that GTX 1070 Ti is little more than a way to lure over a few potential RX Vega 56 customers that are on the fence or struggling to get hold of a card due to short supply (if you're particularly cynical, you could say it's a neat way to use up some slightly off GP104 GPUs, too). The AMD ecosystem might be a better value overall thanks to offerings like Freesync, but Nvidia continues to have it licked on performance. Ultimately, when buying a graphics card, that's what matters most.
