Star Wars Battlefront II Progression Changes

EA announces changes to the loot crate and progression systems in Star Wars Battlefront II, saying "we've listened to your feedback" in addressing complaints the game will be play-to-win. Here's the post:

We went into Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II with a goal to make the deepest, biggest Star Wars™ game you've ever played. That meant transporting you to all three eras and handing you a huge assortment of heroes, classes, and vehicles – as well as bringing tons of free post-launch content to all Star Wars Battlefront II players.

The Beta gave us a welcome chance to test all of our systems in action and tune things up for better balance. A few weeks back, we mentioned we were going to take another look at how the progression system works. After incorporating feedback from the Beta, we’re happy to share our plans for launch:

  • Epic Star Cards, the highest tier of Star Cards available at launch, have been removed from Crates. To help keep everyone on a level playing field, these Star Cards will primarily be available through crafting, with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs.
  • You'll need to reach a certain rank to craft upgraded Star Cards. You won't be able to buy a bunch of Crates, grind everything up into crafting materials, and immediately use them to get super powerful Star Cards. You can only upgrade the ability to craft higher tier Star Cards by ranking up through playing the game.
  • Weapons are locked behind specific milestones. While a select few will be found in Crates, the rest can only be attained by play. Want to unlock a new weapon for your Heavy? Play as a Heavy and you’ll gain access to the class’s new weapons.
  • Class-specific gear and items can be unlocked by playing as them. As you progress through your favorite class, you’ll hit milestones granting you class-specific Crates. These will include a mix of Star Cards and Crafting Parts to benefit your class’s development.

This system, as well as all of the others, will be continually iterated on and improved. As we first announced at EA Play in June, we’re committed to keeping the community together. All upcoming weapons, maps, heroes, and vehicles introduced in Star Wars Battlefront II’s post-release content will be free so that players can play alongside friends as the world of Star Wars Battlefront II continues to grow. We know that the magic is in the balance, and we're going to make sure that we continue to make a game that is fun for everyone.

Yeah agreed. I got OK mileage out of BF1 but even that formula is wearing thin now. They aren't offering me any memorable SP games anymore so I don't think I will be getting any of their stuff in the future. Anthem for example just looks like a Destiny clone, basically a microtransaction vehicle.

Meanwhile Nintendo is off on the sidelines watching these grindy dlc lootbox moneygrab fuckfests, releasing entire self-contained memorable experiences without the need to try and suck their playerbase dry starting on day 1 of the purchase of their new $60 "AAA" game.

At this point I think I'm gonna skip all this bullshit coming out and just buy a Switch with the new Zelda and Mario games. Probably Mario Kart too. I'm just finishing up my first playthrough of Fallout 1 (fucking awesome so far, but I can tell I'm near the end, if these gonzo weapons that shred people to bits that I'm using now are any indication) and might start Fallout 2 before the end of the year too. Maybe Fallout New Vegas after that, as I hear it's a more proper sequel than FO3. Currently watching a video about Interplay's history, to get a better feel as to why a company that released such great games ended up basically non-functional, as they are today.

I really couldn't give a fuck less about the games coming out with these same droning mechanics and fucking lootboxes at the moment. When we look back at this era in gaming that will be one of the least-missed things about any of these games, with many of them unable to be preserved because the servers handling this shit "loot distribution system" that is made to nickel and dime you every step of the way will be completely non-functional at some point. They will become truly disposable entertainment, which not even their developers and publishers thought of in any context besides pre-sales, micro-transactions and overall revenue. For so much beautiful art that is in some of these titles, it's sad to see that gameplay-wise, the art is truly lost in them.

I'm hoping there will be a nice holiday Switch bundle, because it's a purchase I doubt I would regret, unlike most AAA rubbish I'm seeing released now. Funny how just a matter of weeks ago I was very much anticipating the release of Destiny 2 on PC, and how quickly I came to my senses. I don't need a game to sell me on anything besides the merit of the experience included once I purchase it. Dangling carrots for a never-ending cash grab after I've already made the plunge for $50+ on a brand new title just comes across as a hollow-feeling experience any more. It's like forcing myself to eat yet another Igana-on-a-stick out here in the wasteland.. I know there's going to be some radiation along with that tasty snack, but it sure can taste good in the moment. (Not to mention it might actually be made out of people, if you buy them from Bob down at The Hub..)

Lol I guess "everyone" didn't read the "Pissy PC Gamer Monthly" you've been putting out.

Some of us choose to judge things based on their own merits, and not because we have to identify with a tribe.

BTW This is the part where you tell me that "Everyone" (more and more gamers every day) is a moron, and you're the smart one.

What tribes, what the fuck are you on about? Just because you like to play garbage doesn't mean that everyone else does.

Reading the BS in this one I read: Epic Star Cards have been removed from crates but with the exception of special Epic Star Cards available through pre-order, deluxe, and starter packs. Well fuck me if a Starter Pack isn't a first cousin to Lootboxes.

The Shadow of War lootcrate bullshit was a fucking lie and they did it through their teeth without shame.

For the weak minded among us: no matter what you think, the player was crippled without lootboxes. How many legendary orcs did you find? How many gearsets did you complete? I had 40h into SoW and I wasnt even close to completing the gear sets and I had close to no legendary orcs in my army. I was level 48 after 40 hours and thr last 3 levels took me about 10 hours. I felt like I was playing a freemium Clash of Clans kinda game at some point, where you could play without spending a dime but it would be a fucking drag that would take forever.

Rational Youtube vids warn of the same grind in AC Origins, without spending money on loot boxes.

I spent 0 in Shadow of War and 0 in Assassin's Creed...finished both of those games. SoW, I obtained 3 full sets of legendary items, not including the Bright Lord or Vengeance sets. I finished Shadow Wars at around 43 hours (story finished at like 22 hours or so), had all keeps using Legendary orcs, and not once did I have to 'grind' to get them. Hell, it only took me like 25 hours to get to level 60.

Hell, in Assassin's Creed, I didn't even buy the game, only Redbox'd it for 2 days, played a few hours those days and still finished the story.

There still might be a problem, if they tie "in game achievements" to unlocking weapons/cards you might end up with a situation where you won't be able to complete the tasks once the player population drops off.

Yes, the magical balance between squeezing money out of players while not appearing to be greedy monsters.

If there's nobody playing the game, then I think we'd have bigger issues rather than worrying if my grenades have a 24 or 26-second cooldown with the exact same damage, radius etc.

And people hate EA all day everyday. But I don't think you can chalk this up to being "greedy monsters".

Sorry, but "Greedy Monsters" don't give away all DLC content for free to every player. Your calculations of what constitutes evil greed has to take that into account or else your accounting is shown to be severly biased.

I was thinking about Battlefield 1 and some of the achievements that are tied to playing game modes that are dead. There's still life in the base game though.

Yeah well, that's a real concern if they tie achievements to certain modes. The PC community especially suffers from this, as in I haven't found a "Rush" game in BF1 in months. Shit no one even plays the maps from the first DLC pack anymore... This has been going on for years though. I remember buying the new CoD a few years back and within 2 days of launch there was only TDM playlists active, and that was it until the game died.

I'm all for player choice, but I do wish there was some way to gently "force" players to play some of the IMO more fun/unique gamemodes to keep them alive longer.

Shit the "Carrier Assault" in the Naval expansion of BF4 was super cool, was basically the Titan mode from 2142 where you cap missile silos, then have to board the enemy giant ass carrier at the end to blow up the reactor/engine room. That shit was dead after 2 months, and most people never even learned how to play the damned mode, and would just get mad when they lost and didn't understand WTF had just happened, not knowing they have to defend their carrier when it's hull is breached...

I'm not saying EA shouldn't make money for extended content but as it was originally planed it was definitely in the greedy monster category. I wouldn't have any problem paying a little extra for cosmetics, as long as it doesn't affect gameplay.

Lol, yeah... Seems like the only way to get exotic engrams is to purchase these 4-hour booster packs that raise your chance of finding decent loot drops, and then grinding public events. And guess what? The booster packs are purchasable with real money. You can also get them with in-game currency, but it's a very restricted resource (not the general "gold" you use to buy mostly everything else).

Getting X number of kills in a game mode that doesn't have any players playing, that sort of thing.

We know that the magic is in the balance

Yes, the magical balance between squeezing money out of players while not appearing to be greedy monsters. I suppose the problem is Disney not allowing them to add character customization that breaks the visual Star Wars stamp of approval. I don't think they would have any trouble selling character customization for a modern Battlefield game - the sky would be the limit, aside from console memory and storage restraints.
