Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Released; Menu Includes Countdown

Bethesda Softworks announces the release of Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, the latest installment in this seminal first-person shooter series. The Windows edition is available on Steam, offering the welcome chance to punch some Nazis. There's an interesting element about this mentioned on GameInformer, where they note there's a "Vault" item on the menu with a countdown that looks like it will hit zero on November 7th. Bethesda confirms that this will mark the release of the game's first DLC, but they also add: "There are a few extra surprises behind the vault door when the timer reaches 0." The previously released launch trailer shows the alternate-history setting of an occupied United States with a mix of live-action and in-game footage. Here's word on how you can join the resistance with either the standard or collector's edition of the game:
Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that Wolfenstein® II: The New Colossus™, developed by the award-winning team at MachineGames, is available now for the Xbox One, PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system and PC. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus rockets the action and chaos of the Wolfenstein franchise to new heights. As BJ “Terror-Billy” Blazkowicz, players must unite a rag-tag group of resistance fighters all striving toward one common goal: kicking Nazis out of America.

“The Wolfenstein franchise is all about over-the-top action, combat and storytelling,” said Jens Matthies, Creative Director at MachineGames. “With The New Colossus, we pushed our creative boundaries even further, and we can’t wait for players to finally experience the next chapter of this wild ride.”

Wolfenstein II sends players to Nazi-controlled America on a mission to recruit the boldest resistance leaders left. Players will fight the Nazis in iconic locations such as small-town Roswell, New Mexico, quarantined New Orleans, and a post-nuclear Manhattan. Armed with an impressive arsenal of fully upgradeable retro sci-fi weaponry, including the all-new Dieselkraftwerk, players can unleash new abilities to blast through legions of advanced Nazi soldiers and über soldiers in this definitive first-person shooter.

Also available today is the Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus Collector's Edition, which includes a 1/6 scale 12-inch action figure of the game's Nazi-killin' hero William Joseph "BJ" Blazkowicz, packaged in a premium, 1960s-style box. BJ comes fully equipped to rally the Resistance and free America, with an arsenal of accessories including four high-powered guns, a hatchet, and his bomber jacket. This limited Collector's Edition also includes the eagerly awaited game inside an exclusive metal case, and a 9"x14" Blitzmensch poster.

As far as I know, Germany is one of the most vigorous prosecutors of Holocaust deniers; in no way do they pretend the Nazis never happened. I think the idea is that they don't want video games using the symbology cheaply, or in a way against the official viewpoint. It's the opposite of how we treat Confederate history in the US, leaving all these Confederate statues and memorials around ostensibly so that people can reflect on the mistakes of the past... or they can do the other thing with all the states' rights crap. I'm pretty sure that's the exact scenario that Germany was trying to avoid.

And in modern video games they would have a cow over people rallying around the swastika in multiplayer games.

To be fair, all the major players in WWII have tried very hard to bury the parts of history they're not too proud of. Some are just more overt about it than others.

Germany, dude. They don't allow swastikas here in games but only in movies and other forms of art. Yes. Games are not art here (IMO rightfully so but that's a different topic).

In the trailer, the animations look forced and unnatural. Does they seem that way while playing the game too?

Most of the combat animations are excellent, enemies and your own character's animations. Most of the cutscenes, the body animations are pretty good, the one obvious drawback is the eyeballs are a little off, or rather, the eyelids are a little off, in terms of not very human motion. I get the feeling the animation for the faces was done by hand, not motion cap via an actor's face, for the most part, or maybe even via some sort of automated process.

Not a lot of blinking in alternate reality 1960's America.

Honestly though the excellent voicework makes up for it, none of these companies have infinite funds, and I think Machinehead spent their cut scene money on very well done models and backgrounds, and professional VA talent, not so much on state of the art facial animation or face-motion capture.

Okay, I'm about 8 hours into the game or so, and so far the game is extremely good. Shooting is tight, weapons are for the most part balanced and fun to use(the main assault rifle with Armor Piercing mod is comfortably the best all around weapon if you can headshot reliably), voice acting is excellent for the most part, character and environmental design is amazing, and whoever they got to do their engineering models...GG.

The story is extremely entertaining, bouncing back and forth between horror elements, some surprisingly good comedy, a little too melodramatic humanity moments, and of course ridiculous action and deliberately over the top sci-fi/fantasy scenes.

One crash to desktop so far, but none since. Not sure what it was either, may have been updated out at some point? In general the game seems to run extremely well, i7-6770, 32GB Ram, M2 format SSD, Win 8.1, 144hz 2560x1440 monitor, ultra settings, no motion blur.

One question though, for people who have the game, and are reasonably far along into it:

If BJ, or any human, for that matter, is on a runaway vehicle of some kind, about to crash, would he say:

A. "AAAAHHH!!"
B. "Oh Fuck!"
C. "Oh God NOOO!!"
D. "Cock......Cock." (Voiced in utter deadpan)

Some of the dialogue is hilarious for all the wrong reasons.

Perk system seems better this time around than the first game, it isn't quite as ridiculous in terms of the number or style of kills required to unlock some upgrades.

Another thing: Depending on your eyesight, maybe DON'T set the brightness as low as the game suggests, there have been a couple areas where I really couldn't see anything at all of the enemies until they started shooting or I bumped into them in the dark; gray and black models with almost no footstep or ambient sounds, and effectively pitch black areas of the map. Admittedly, it looks cool, but you can basically get instakilled on higher difficulty, or waste enough hp/armor that you might as well reload anyway.

Definitely worth playing, although I can see the argument for waiting to buy on sale when all the DLC is out, and also on sale. I bought earlier than normal largely because of all the death of single player games talk lately. Plus, I wanted to play.

That's some backward ass logic you got there.

In your upside down world it's ok to punish a dev with an illegal act for something that they have absolutely no control over.

You played the game so instead of being a slimy thief the least you should do is purchase a copy.

So any game with Nazi stuff gets the ban hammer. The only version of Wolfenstein we can buy on Steam is censored and to add insult to injury they also only have the horrible German language version.

They changed all the symbols in the German version and the Nazis are called "the regime" or something like that. It probably also has all-out cuts and altered dialogues. It's butchered like hell.

You know, back in the days before Steam, I would simply hit EBGames or GameStop and import a US copy of Return to Castle Wolfenstein CE (quite expensive with shipping but I was willing to do it for an uncensored copy), insert CD and play but in the age of the glorious region lock this is no longer possible.

There are ways to work around it with VPN, offline mode and so on but it's all kinda inconvenient and also slightly risky because it is against Valve's ToS ofc.

I don't usually pirate EVER but the Wolfensteins after RtCW had to be freebies due to the region locking bullshit.

The campaign ist THAT GOOD (8 hours into it now).
It's crazy how they managed to tell a heartbreaking AND hilarious story WITH over the top gunplay.

Man, everybody keeps telling me to play First Blood, but I never did.

Joking aside, I felt like The Old Blood was actually better than the first one. It felt more refined and streamlined. The story was at least as good if not better, but it did feel a bit shorter than New Order. I love trying to play stealthily in those games. I feel like it's a lot more fun when you try to add that challenge. It's also easier to stealth kill than running in guns blazing.

I see these guys playing it on YouTube and I can't help but keep thinking they're just really bad. They aren't playing the game right, saying it's hard, but then they set off every alarm, never try to sneak around, or even go for headshots. Of course it's going to be harder to take them down when you aim specifically for their armored areas... >_< It's like these kids have never played a modern Wolfenstein game before.

Unfortunately, I played for about 20 - 30 minutes last night and thought I was going to barf. Seems to be a few others with the problem. Which is odd since I can play Destiny 2 for 2+ hours at a stretch with no problem. Not sure what this game is doing differently, but damn. It fucked me up for an hour. Hoping to get through the first part today since the movement is jerky for spoiler-free reasons.

Hrm, that's terrible. Part of it is probably the plot device, but it might also be the Motion Blur on top of that? I turned off Motion Blur, because that usually gives me a bit of a headache in games anyway. I'd say mess with VSync also, but if you're getting crashes from resolution changes, nevermind.

The major movement plot jerkiness goes away fairly quickly, but keep in mind, movement in this game has a slight simulated footstep thing going on, it's not smooth panning hovering camera style motion. I haven't seen an option to turn that off anywhere, but there's probably a console setting.

I got through the first couple areas, then crashed to desktop in the base, during a 'down' period. Had to do some running around, going to fire the game up again now though. So far the shooting feels great, melee kills are horrific; overall design seems amazingly good. Although it feels like enemies should make more footstep noise? Even guys in 200 pounds of armor seem to be sneaking around like ninjas.
