Out of the Blue

My backache is getting better, or at least I think it is. Previously it would pop up when I moved the wrong way, delivering a sharp, stabbing pain. That aspect of it has subsided, and now it's much more of a dull ache. The bad news is the sharp pain was occasional, while the new dull pain is constant. I think this is a good tradeoff, but I can't wait for it to abate completely. This reminds me I'm lucky that a twinge like this is such a rare event for me, and it elicits real sympathy in me for the many people out there who suffer from actual back problems.

Really?

Blue, of all people, would know not to take his advice. But may your warning help others that are searching a gaming forum for lumbago advice.

Sweet mother. Please do some research before paying attention to some of this witchdoctor crackpottery. BenGay....for an odd epidermal sensation....that does nothing for musculature/joints. Muscle relaxants....that are just sedatives....that do nothing directly benefiting musculature/joints. Chiropractors....which other than the working of joints and slight massage....do nothing for your body that you can't get from manual exertion....it's practically homeopathy.

NSAIDs for inflammation. Heat/cold for circulation. Exercise, massage, and manual joint manipulation to help with stiffness and building up protection against another incident. Yeah, NSAIDs are bad in big doses for more than a couple of weeks....which is why you use that time to heal and rebuild.

For your back (I'm sure you're doing most of this already):
- Take ibuprofen every six hours.
- Walk around.
- Now that you're past the first day, you should be alternating heat and ice.
- Get a back massager. I got this one from Costco for $50, and it works great. My daughter even uses it after her 2 hour swim practice.

No, don't take ibuprofen. It elevates blood pressure as well as cerebral spinal fluid and intercranial pressure, all it does is mask pain and it's ototoxic to boot. For muscle spasms you're far better off using a muscle relaxant like Robaxin. The muscle heals much better when its relaxed and not spasming and blood is getting to it more easily. And that's why massage helps it immensely. Striated muscles tend to pancake over time and massage looses the layers up to get bloodflow to them. Chiro is good because gravity compresses your spine over time and CNS nerves and muscle can get pinched and/or strained as well which can cause those sorts of spasm and pain. That or inversion therapy helps stretch things out and loosen up. Yoga or just general light, sustained stretching is also a major benefit.

I know because I've always had a problem with my T7 vertabrae for as long as I can remember so I had to learn/do all this stuff to constantly keep it from hurting all the time. That or undergo major surgery to repair it which I'm not inclined to do seeing as you can end up paralyzed if it goes wrong. No thanks. I'll just take the drugs and therapy when I need to which isn't often so long as you do regular maintenance.

Mandatory arbitration is A-OK and the likes of Equifax, Wells Fargo can keep up the good work without fear of crippling lawsuits, because it's not like they're doing anything wrong.

Unless Trump vetoes the bill, which ahahaha, no.

It's almost as if there weren't very good, very recent, examples of why forced arbitration is a bad idea for consumers. It's funny; I expect congress to sellout the public to corporations in such a painfully obvious fashion, but that doesn’t stop it from hurting my brain when it happens. Then again knowing you’re going to get kicked in the nuts doesn’t reduce the pain when it actually happens.

Take some muscle relaxants or get the wife to slather on some icy-hot, go see a masseuse and/or chiro. Treat it, Blue, don't just sit and wallow. I never understand that 'walk it off' mentality. If no treatment is available than fine, but there's tons in this case and all readily available. Remember most of these issues aren't problems themselves but symptoms of a greater problem - particularly if they're chronic.

I had a lot more back problems in my 20s than I do today. I would throw it out several times a year, and suffer immense pain. Why? Because I was fat, and I never exercised. Now I work out daily, and am thinner, and voila, it only happens about once every other year. And when it does happen, it's always from something stupid that I did, like lift something in the wrong way.

Ouch, well hope it keeps getting better. Granny Moses/Clampett used prescribe “rheumatiz medicine” for backache, in case that helps.
