Fallout Turning 20: Get a Free Copy

The original Fallout turns 20 years old tomorrow, as the post-apocalyptic RPG was first released on September 30, 1997. To celebrate, the game is available for free on Steam for a limited time, an offer that apparently does not extend to other digital storefronts (thanks Ars Technica). The game will be a permanent edition to your library as long as you act on this offer by 2:59 am Sunday morning (11:59 pm PDT). Since it has been 20 years, here's a refresher on the game:
You've just unearthed the classic post-apocalyptic role-playing game that revitalized the entire CRPG genre. The FalloutĀ® SPECIAL system allows drastically different types of characters, meaningful decisions and development that puts you in complete control. Explore the devastated ruins of a golden age civilization. Talk, sneak or fight your way past mutants, gangsters and robotic adversaries. Make the right decisions or you could end up as another fallen hero in the wastelands...

So I've been playing this for a couple hours today and was thinking about using an autohotkey script to change some of the hotkeys around. Wanted to ask first whether there are going to be any areas of the game that require typing before doing this though, for passwords, puzzles, etc.. Any Fallout vets care to chime in?

It's been a while since I've last played Fallout but I don't think there were any instances of typing required. If I remember correctly, if there was an in-game password needed for a door or something, one of the selectable interaction/conversation options would be something like:
- Input password: flargle
- Punch door.
- Yell at door.
- Make a comment in some random thread at Bluesnews about how shitty the door is because of their political views or gender.

LOL

The only typing required so far after about 6 hours of playtime today has been to name save files and to use the stupid manual NPC chat entry option, which seems utterly useless after a couple tries. Remembered that I already have a quick shortcut key setup to disable/enable AHK, so it doesn't really matter anyways.

Having a lot of fun with my rogue/bruiser. I haven't been able to peel myself away from the game for most of the day. Wondering if thievery was a good option to go with though.. in the only town I've been to (Shady Sands), I was able to rob the place blind without anybody so much as batting an eye. NPCS just kind of stand there like nothing is going on, even when I'm emptying their bookshelves right in front of them.

EDIT: After dying to the same set of scorpions 3 times when trying to reach the second vault, I finally found you can enter the starting vault from the overworld map.. strange I couldn't enter back in through the main vault door in the cave though. Found two computers in the library I could use the science skill on and they gave me 350xp a pop, raising me to level 2! Maybe I can make it to the second vault now. It's been a slow fucking start, that's for sure.

7 years since Beth decided to screw it up.

Opinions, opinions...

It is, a very valid opinion however that is shared by many. The story in FO3 is academic and poor, FO4 is better but still missing a lot of the dark humor and witty writing. But I do give them props for 4 being better however. Both the writing and story in FO 3 and 4 are not in the same ballpark as Fo 1, 2 or NV. BIS and Obsidian had, have excellent writers. Beth has excellent designers and programmers. If beth would have contracted Obsidian for a story, the writing and beth just did the technical aspect it would be a ideal game. Outside of high fantasy beth can't write themselves out of a wet paper bag when put up against a studio like Obsidian, Larian, CDP or the like.

Beth makes excellent action adventure sandbox games, those other studios make great CRPGs. That's the difference. and beth seems to want to turn FO into a action adventure sandbox game and get away from the RPG aspects.

I definitely prefer 1, 2, and Tactics over any of the "Neu-Fallout" on Bethesda engines. The newer ones just don't feel like "Fallout" to me and that's why I'm never able to get into them, and its not necessarily the perspective change, but then again I do like time to think during combat, so turn-based is definitely more my thing. There's a lot of little nuances and reactive design elements in these older titles that are simply not existent in the new ones - plenty of videos around discuss what that means. Anyways, once in a while I restart a new game on the original and try out new tactics or character types.

Absolute classic and my favored isometric crpg to this day. This was a game that blew my mind when I first played it (demo CD-Action magazine). Road warrior of crpgs where nothing was black and white, world was brutal and very atmospheric. Replayed it a dozen times over the years, including "low inteligence" "no violence" and "genocide" playthrough each fully supported and fun way of playing.
Shame that its legacy reached abortion level of daftness in Fallout 4.

Heads up that this is the censored version. Though FIXT works to uncensor it.

What do you mean, censored? I can't take the Bloody Mess trait or something?

Because "killing kids are bad" even when they pick your pockets obviously. You're supposed to just run past them, not give them a hot potato.

All digital versions of Fallout 1 are censored because they use the UK version 1.2. When Bethesda removed the original Fallout games from all stores before re-releasing them (after adding Bethesda logos to them), they bundling it with the high res. patch, so I don't understand why they didn't add the children back.

Thanks for the heads-up on the FIXT mod too, Mashiki. That seems to be like a good addition to playing the game properly after reading up on it over at ModDB.

There is a stand-alone patch that just restores the children if you want to play pure Fallout (bugs and all). The unofficial patches from TeamX also add them back. Fixt is pretty much all you need though. It's basically a compilation of just about everything in an installer that lets you chose what you want.

I have to admit here that I've never played any of the Fallout games. I even own like 2 or 3 of them on steam, from the bethesda quakecon packs that were stupid cheap. I think I'll start with this, as I love top-down isometric RPG's from the era this was released. Spent wayyy too much time with a small handful of them though (Ultima VII especially), so never got to experience a couple of the gems that others adored, like Fallout.

Thanks for the heads-up on the FIXT mod too, Mashiki. That seems to be like a good addition to playing the game properly after reading up on it over at ModDB. Upon further inspection, that is actually the 5th most popular mod (out of over 30,000) on the entire site. Impressive.

At this rate I should probably get around to Fallout 4 by the year 2100, with the assistance a cyborg augmentation or two. =)
