PlanetSide 2 Patch Includes Major Changes

The PlanetSide 2 Forums have details on a new "Critical Mass" update for PlanetSide 2, the multiplayer shooter sequel (thanks Dave). This adds a new weapon and implements a bunch of major changes to various systems, including a complete reworking of the vehicle/infantry relationship. Here's word on a continent locking revamp that's part of this:

Continent Locking Revamp
With the Critical Mass update comes a major revision of the way continents are fought over and conquered. When one faction has refined enough cortium and controlled enough territory, that faction triggers an alert which signifies the impending domination of a continent. If the triggering faction wins the alert, they will conquer the continent and call in an armada of Bastion Fleet Carriers to rain destruction upon their enemies.

The Goal
One of the driving motivators of revitalizing the continent locking system is to encourage more strategy and competitive spirit in PlanetSide 2. Prior to this update, locking a continent was not only confusing for many players, but also happened abruptly, and often times without direct influence from the players fighting on the front lines. The new system intends to create a climactic end-of-continent encounter that challenges players not only as individuals, but as squads, platoons, and outfits. We want players to feel the rush of a hard fought victory, and reward them for partaking in it.

I'm impressed that after all these years, they're still trying to make this game fun.

This shit is only changing "majorly" cuz it's scared shitless of Destiny 2 and Anthem.

Which brings up an interesting philosophical question: If shit is scared shitless, is it still shit?

Hmmmmmmm....

I also thought Planetside 2 was pretty good for a couple months a few years ago, and to this day I still don't understand the flow of map control or why EVERYONE is battling for THIS station (and sign-in the next day and no one cares about it). I just accepted this futile struggle to represent war, like Nam.

This was one of the reasons I stopped playing. The battles started to get repetitive with the bases constantly flipping back and forth. There didn't seem to be much reason to holding a base. We attacked the other bases because that's where everyone was, not because there was anything at the base worth having.

So what they have now is the ALERT system, where a continent will go under a multi-hour battle time, usually 12 hours I think. At the end of those 12 hours the side with the most victory points wins and locks the continent. Why do you care? well it's massive XP give outs and it means that there's a sort of team progression for the continent so the battles become meaningful.. lots of last hour slug fests which are decided by a key hot drop and ressurect grenades to hold that timer from counting down to base flip.

Really fun game with actually a pretty decent learning curve, if you get into an outfit with coordination it becomes ultra fun.

I played entirely alone (one-man outfit) and did pretty well. To be fair, it took well over 100 hours for me to get over 1.0 KDR doing that, and I would never suggest a new(er) player do anything but run with an outfit. However after 650+ hours I managed BR70 or so with 4.2+ KDR entirely solo so it is possible...but I agree it's a LOT more fun with coordination. I usually freelance my way into a platoon but my favorite pastime is troll-defending bases solo or with a handful of people versus a larger enemy. Still fun to this day, I just stopped playing when they decided to update and change shit constantly and I couldn't keep up.

I may reinstall for some lulz or whatever the kids call it now.

My son and I had a lot of fun with this when it came out. They did mess up a lot of stuff PS1 did better, but over time they fixed a lot of it. Also screwed some things up, so maybe it's all dart throwing in the design room anyway.

So I carved up the enemy infantry in close combat and showed no mercy!

I think you guys forget that they added artillery canons that were complete bullshit, vehicle pads that were locked in the same spot per base.

I loved planetside 1 up until they added those Artillery.

Planetside 2, after years is still a blast and they haven't completely broken the game, the flight model is actually quite hard to master and the difference in bases makes certain bases extremely hard to take and others not worth defending.

In Planetside 1, you could be outnumbered and still successfully defend a base with strategy and the chokepoints.

Addendum: I liked the artillery, and I'm even one of those who liked the (A)BFRs. The Core Combat itself... not so much.

PlanetSide 2 is so disappointing. PanetSide 1 was one of my favorite games ever but they changed way too many things in the sequel.
